Why is it that all the shiny things get names but the big, black areas of empty nothingness do not? It’s about time that they got names as well, so say hello to the Pit of Despond (the area between Orion’s bottom and Canis Major’s nose), The Aviary (where Aquila and Cygnus spend the night) and Ambridge (where Sagittarius & his mates go to practise).

8^) [PeterSealy] You're such a hypocrite:

"Swanwick takes a fascinating mix of NANOTECHNOLOGY, MAGIC, the vagaries of human nature..." (emphasis mine)
-- phoenix, Nov 20 2001

I think that you're being condemned for reading a load of old tosh rather than for your comments on this idea, Peter.

And the region around Uranus would be.................? (Well, it had to be said.)
-- pussygalore, Nov 20 2001

Hell, I'll vote for it ... despite the fact that it has absolutely nothing to do with specialty clothing retailers that sell jeans to Jennifer Lopez and Brad Pitt.

Peter's right, everybody. La Brea is a star-free zone.

Fits some of my moods: "Armpit of the Universe"; "Take your 'point of the big bang' and stick it where the sun don't shine."; "That sky looks like Hell scabbed over."; Schroachdinger Holetel; space warps in, but don't warp out. Croissy, black and crusty.

Xanadu ... that great space between Pussygalore ear1 and Pussygalore ear2 :) (I'm kidding, I'm a kidder) :)

Can you name something that's esentially an absence?
-- notmarkflynn, Feb 20 2006

Dark. An absence of light. Room. An absence of bricks. Didn't [FJ] do an idea about writing using the spaces between letters?
-- wagster, Feb 20 2006

What do you call an absence of Mark Flynn?
-- wagster, Feb 20 2006

I dunno. But an absence of credibility is called a 'politician'.
-- DrBob, Feb 21 2006

Can there be an absence of absent objects?
-- DesertFox, Feb 21 2006

there's no such thing as nothing
