.......

A society of fellows who gather on a semi-regular basis to watch the funniest comedians/movies etc.

If you laugh, you are no longer in the society.

Laughter can be detected by suits that are worn at the event that can detect repetitive diaphragmatic convulsions.

If a laugh is detected, LED's in the suit will alight, and the movie/show will stop. The no-longer member will be placed on a stretcher and silently removed from the event by other members.

Um...why?

//LED's in the suit will alight// That will be very pretty to watch.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Jan 17 2008

Members would strive to play practical jokes on themselves, hoping that the onlookers would start giggling and be thrown out of the club.

alight doesn't mean light up does it?

anyway, it would be interesting how long you could last, whether it would get old after the first show and you would commit laughicide.

However, if you were the performer and "normal" audiences wore this jacket, you could adjust your performance

Sort-of Baked, there is a round in the BBC radio show "I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue" where the team have to say unconnected words one after the other without making the audience laugh.

//alight doesn't mean light up does it?// No. As an adjective, it can mean "on fire". But as a verb, it means "to get off or out" (as of a train).

Hence the unintentionally ironic recorded announcement on one of the London Underground lines which says "Alight here for the Royal National Institute for the Blind."

They obviously have a burning reason to disembark.

Ok, keep the suit, but double points for those who have belly laughter and manage to keep a straight face.

I'm already out!
-- M Carter, Jan 23 2008

<protesting>
"...but I was choking on the popcorn!"

Ha, ha, that's a good'un...<LEDs switch on>...Oh sh*t.

Is it laughing on the outside, crying on the inside, or the other way round ?

Does EVERYONE around here read Pratchett, or what?
