Trained Octopi Restaurant   (+6, -2)  [vote for, against]
No, we don't serve serve octopi, the octopi serve you!

As stated in many places, and here on the halfbakery, octopi are smart. Smart enough, I hope, to learn how to cook.

Specializing in seafood, octopi work together to create your food. Some of them reside in the large tank beneath the glass floor, where, when you order your food, they catch your food. Fish, oysters, and clams are no match for the octopi. They then bring the fish/shellfish/lobster to a special receptacle, which drains the water and is brought to an oven.

There, an octopus in an exosuit begins to cook your food, the exosuit operated by touch sensitive armsleeves. Eight mechanical legs are useful for cooking. The exosuit has a glass body in which you can watch your octopi chef.

For different dishes, different cephalapod chefs will be taught certain things to cook.

Afterwards, your meal is brought to you by an octopus in a waterfilled glass bowl on wheels with a food tray on top.

Then you may eat your octopus-free meal and leave a generous tip to be used to buy good treats for your octopi waiters and chefs.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to assume we can get *any* trained animals to serve in a restaurant, let alone cook food.

Octopi are smarter than dogs. And you can teach a dog to do a lot.
-- DesertFox, Nov 09 2005

Hey, if you can do it, do it! I just think you're overlooking a few things. Like how you're going to get that exosuit to work. And that octopi are pretty floppy outside water.

[DF], indeed, this dog's a moderator, for example.

Ah, the old New Yorker cartoon...

P.S. There is a frog idea you need to work your moderator magic on.

Octopuses are smart and have great memories, but I don't think they're smarter than dogs. But they are definitely the smartest among the invertebrates. Not a great deal is known about octopus intelligence.

Some cool things that we know about octopuses (the giant ones at least):

- Octopuses have large brains and so are expected to be somewhat intelligent.
- Octopuses can learn through observation...
- ...which is a remarkable trait to evolve because octopuses aren't social creatures.
- Captive octopuses have been known to escape from their tanks and go for a walk around the aquarium.

They're also known to cultivate small areas of the seabed, where they hang out during periods of precipitation. Boy, I'd like to be there.

Um, just *how* far off the coast of Switzerland...?

If you tie a large wicca basket to the eight legs of a giant octopus, the octopus will 'know' that it looks like a hot air baloon and it will swim up to the surface and out into air. It will then 'float' through the air until 'self-awareness' kicks in.

I feel an irresistable pedantic urge. It's not good. I cannot fight it.

Octopus = Octo- (i.e. eight) -pus (i.e. foot). Some kind of Latinized Greek is it?

Not the same as "Latin" Octop-us (c.f. Syllabus, Terminus). So not Octop-i ...

I am ashamed. The dirt does not come off.

//A large wicca basket// How *do* baskets get religion, anyway?
-- moomintroll, Nov 10 2005

I really like this idea, right up to the point where the octopus starts cooking.. from there on it just gets rediculous.. ;)

However, I think it's not completely outside the realm of reality to train octopuses to catch fish and deposit it in a basket. Now to make 'm catch *specific types* of fish on command could be tricky though.. maybe even impossible..

Overall, a [+] for originality.. ;)

Even if you did manage to get the octopi to cook, a health inspector would have an absolute fit.

Which might be really funny come to think of it.

Very original though.

Hey, if monkeys can learn to gamble, and chimps are sending postcards to the The Barenaked Ladies (at least according to the song), octopuses should be able to learn the skills to run a fine restaurant.
