Virtue Flag To Fly In Front Of Big Estates   (+3, -2)  [vote for, against]
A stupid idea? Stupid like a fox!

So you drive down the avenue in the nice part of town looking at the massive estates and wonder "How many of these people earned their money doing evil shit?"

Now there's a way to know. "Virtue Flags" by Remucon Industries offers up certified flags that tell the world: "I earned my money by doing good stuff and not harming anybody."

Our team of dedicated dedicatees review your financial records and determine if you earned your money nobly or by nefarious means. We're like a Consumer Reports ranking for rich people.

If you're a drug cartel kingpin, no flag for you. If you invented an anti cancer drug that's saved millions of people, you get a flag but if you're a pharma guy getting millions addicted to your glorified, reformulated, repackaged crack, no flag for you. Entertainers that stay out of politics and have actual talent? Flag. Engineers and inventors? Flag. Doctors? Flag. Lawyers? No flag.

Now of course you don't need to buy our service but people might wonder why you don't have a Remucon Virtue Flag flying in front of your home.

What's on it? I don't know, leave that to the drug addled losers in the art department.

Sniper bones are cowardly!

OK, who threw that? Come on! Who threw that?

Stand and deliver! (link)

pretty easy to do that (virtually) with google maps and public records.

I predict we're no more than a decade a way from being shamed on a continuous basis by some sort of AR angel on our shoulder as we walk about life. We're destined to become as happy as a cranky toddler.

How much do these flags cost?

What is the extra cost if you're evil and trying to whitewash your reputation?
-- pocmloc, Jan 15 2019

Sir I resent the implication that we can be bought off!

(That being said we can be... ahem... flexible.)
-- doctorremulac3, Jan 15 2019

// I resent the implication //

Fine, just as long as you're OK with actually being bought off.

Cash, used notes, nothing bigger than a 20 ... brown paper bag, usual place ?
-- 8th of 7, Jan 15 2019

These allegations of corruption are completely unfounded!

(Yea, the usual place.)
-- doctorremulac3, Jan 16 2019

What if you're the person who's ruined people's lives and reputations by failing to put up a virtue flag in front of their houses? Should you have a virtue flag in front of your house?

The first fishbone is mine. More than happy to explain myself :
(A) the idea of a job morality indicator has already been posted on the halfbakery (I am of the view that the present idea would have been better suited to being an annotation on that idea, but that is, I appreciate, a subjective view). Similarly, the Chinese Social Credit Score is widely known to exist and has been discussed in this parish before. In short, the proposed idea is not particularly original;
(B) virtue signalling is a concept that exists, as I understand it, in American political discourse and is, again as I understand it, a popular trope of sections of the US commentariat (professional and amateur). I think that unless the intent behind the idea was to precipitate a lively intellectual debate on the merits or otherwise of virtue signalling (perish the thought), I am stumped as to why the idea would be given this obfusticatory drapery, so, minus marks for presentation;
(C) my personal rule of thumb is that if I can't tell whether a posting is a stupid joke or a stupid idea, it's the adjective that matters, and it's the adjective that warrants the fishbone.

//I earned my money by doing good stuff and not harming anybody// I earned my money by developing weapons that are then used to kill people who can only afford to live in tin shacks in Yemen. You see it's too subjective as to what 'good stuff' is. I don't for example describe factory farmers as doing "good stuff" but they would, and you might too. You can never get consensus on a criteria like 'good stuff'. Trump thinks he does 'good stuff'. Do you? Bankers do 'good stuff' but they also evict mortgage defaulters etc. What does 'good stuff' mean? If you work in a slaughter house, are you doing 'good stuff'? If you plant GM crops and deny people access to natural non-toxic alternatives are you doing 'good stuff'? Many will say yes, but many will say no. (other bone not mine by the way. I seldom bone anything except the totally repulsive)

//I am stumped as to why the idea would be given this obfusticatory drapery//

//I can't tell whether a posting is a stupid joke or a stupid idea//

On the other hand, sometimes sniper bones are OK.

Thank you for sharing the song in the link, it actually gave me a little insight into where you're coming from. I put up a song that sort of shows you where I'm coming from. Maybe you'll be open to giving it a listen.

// I earned my money by developing weapons that are then used to kill people who can only afford to live in tin shacks in Yemen. //

We don't recall you on our development team, were you using an alias ?

// Trump thinks he does 'good stuff'. Do you? //

Yes.

// If you work in a slaughter house, are you doing 'good stuff'? //

For hungry people ? Yes.

// If you plant GM crops and deny people access to natural non-toxic alternatives are you doing 'good stuff'? Many will say yes, but many will say no. //

Again, depends on how hungry you are ...

..... and there lies the problem with the entire premise of the idea. People whom a person of 8th's destructive ethos see 'doing good work' as generating pollution; killing everything that moves; and promoting hatred and stupidity.
-- xenzag, Jan 16 2019

// killing everything that moves; //

Not "everything" - on the other hand, we do kill plants as well, which tend to be immobile.

// and promoting hatred and stupidity. //

... to positions of influence in the Labour Party (if you include anti-semitism in your definition of "hatred and stupidity").

We also encourage unnecessary random violence against the weak, innocent and helpless. If you want a full list of the services we can offer, we'll email it to you.

Listened to the song in your link, doc, enjoyed it and then spent some time reflecting on what it has to do with the idea. I am drawing a blank, but have for the time being revised my mental image of your fashion choices. For the record, the Shipbuilding link was as a consequence of xenzag's comment, rather than being directly connected with my own ow you say issues with the idea.

//spent some time reflecting on what it has to do with the idea//

Absolutely nothing. Glad you enjoyed it.
