Food: Water
Water in Pill Form   (+5, -7)  [vote for, against]
take your water...

I have a good friend who won't drink water because "it tastes bad" but then she wonders why she is feels bad and gets colds. I say "drink water" But, she won't.

I wonder if it would be possible to make "water snacks" they would be soft gels filled with water. They would be pretty colors and all you'd need to do is eat about 90 of them a day and you'd have your water...

Most people would just rather drink the water and be done with it but this might help my friend.

If it's not possible to make pills filled with water, just make pills filled with nothing and tell people to take them 8 times a day with a glass of water....

The myth about daily water requirements. http://www.snopes.c.../myths/8glasses.asp

What would your friend (if that is her real name) wash the pills down with?
-- beauxeault, May 21 2002

Vodka. Why, what do you wash your pills down with?
-- mcscotland, May 21 2002

Beer. Non-American beer that is.
-- dag, May 21 2002

Custard.

As a kid, I only drank water with pills, so I naturally associated the taste of water with aspirin. I've tried to correct this as an adult, and started drinking bottled spring water about 5 years ago. Now I live on the stuff - I drink almost a gallon of water every day.

My recommendation to your friend regarding developing a taste for water: tell her to dedicate two weeks to the task, during which she drinks only water and absolutely nothing else. Force herself to it and at the end of those two weeks she'll love it, I bet.

Mixing the water with certain, sun-dried leaves and a bit of sugar or honey makes it more palatable. I'm told this works with both hot and cold water. There's also Kool-Aid and coffee - both mostly water.
-- phoenix, May 21 2002

waugs, you may be drinking too much water. I think 8 glasses is the recommended amount. I like flavoured spring water myself.
-- po, May 21 2002

[po] How much is in a typical glass? Not sure how to convert...

The last desert survival course I took taught a gallon a day while resting in the shade, but that was environment specific.
-- dag, May 21 2002

I'm with phoenix on this one....except coffee and Kool-aid aren't the best choices. I can't stand water, but I buy concentrated fruit juice (lots of Vitamin C and low sugar) and add water. It is far easier to drink eight 12oz glasses of lemonade a day than to drink the same amount of water. Also, a gallon a day is about right...although I drink more than that most days.
-- runforrestrun, May 21 2002

a glass as I understand it is about 1/2 pint (8 x 1/2 pint = 4 pints or 1/2 gallon. I think drinking too much water upsets the salt balance in the body, although I am no expert on this. I do know that drinking too much in one go can be a killer.
-- po, May 21 2002

[blissmiss] - Since the water would be inside of the pill it would have no taste-- Though now I'm told that eating watermelon works in the same way so maybe this is not the best idea...
-- futurebird, May 21 2002

Odd. My sources tell me that watermellon (with a drilled-hole in a side) is also the perfect delivery vehicle for vodka.

To each his/her own. *shrugs*

Just eat lots of cucumbers. And before you eat them, you can use them for crude sexual innuendos (innuendi?) which you can't do with pills unless you pretend they're viagra, which gets tired quickly.
-- pottedstu, May 21 2002

You'd have to drink *a lot* of water [po]. Like your own body volume.
-- mcscotland, May 21 2002

Mixed with lemon juice, honey and brown sugar, a dash of cinnamon, then two measures of malt, - what a combo, can't fail. Six or seven a night should up the intake and be rather pleasant- works for me, even when I don't have a cold/flu.
-- arora, May 21 2002

Anybody who likes downing pills more than drinking water probably has more problems than dehydration.
-- destro, May 22 2002

What UnaBubba said. futurebird: Buy her one, and while you're at it - get yourself one. Water is our motor oil without the petroleum aftertaste.
-- thumbwax, May 22 2002

If anyone really has a problem with drinking water there is another solution [sic]. Water can be introduced directly into the large intestine via the rectum, with a hosepipe or similar. Said water is absorbed in exactly the same way as drunk water, though it is best to dissolve some salts (orange juice, coffee, vinegar) with it. I believe that this is standard medical procedure for severe dehydration... enjoy
-- goatfaceKilla, May 22 2002

goatfacekilla, I thought the major reasons people got severely dehydrated was because they couldn't keep liquids in their body because of vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of water through the skin (perspiration or burns) or a combination of those. If it's the diarrhea, how are you going to get the water enema to keep?
-- barnzenen, May 22 2002

i think they already make something like this. i believe you can find it in your local grocery store... look for a package that says 'sugar free jell-o"
-- jiggersplat, May 23 2002

Ice cubes. I wouldn't fancy being re-hydrated by having them inserted in my rectum though.
-- chronic irony, May 24 2002

//If it's the diarrhea, how are you going to get the water enema to keep?//

A bung.
-- Loris, Apr 11 2006

I agree with your friend... Do you have any idea what fish DO in water? Yuch!
-- Dub, Apr 11 2006

// Now I live on the stuff // well, yes, I think that's the idea with water

Now here's a thought, if I'm supposedly made up of 80% water, then surely it follows that if I drink 20% of my own body weight in water, I will become *entirely* water, like Alex Mack, and I'll be able to slosh around all day doing cool watery things.
-- daaisy, Apr 11 2006

<faux butler voice> Sorry to bust your bubble sir, but you'd only be 80 1/3% water then. Percentages, sir.</fbv>
-- DesertFox, Apr 11 2006

You're fired!!!!
-- daaisy, Apr 12 2006

It's a bit of a myth that you need to drink large quantities of water each day (link). Most of your water requirements are contained in the food that you eat (unless you live on a diet of crisps and pork scratchings).

Per phoenix's anno earlier. A nice cup of tea and a biscuit is the preferred method of re-hydrating for a person of quality such as myself (and before anyone starts banging on about caffeine and de-hydration...read the link!).

<refering to [DrBob]'s link>

See? I am healthy. I get plenty of liquids. <Takes sip of 40th cup of Chai for the morning> Mmmmm, Chai. Precious, precious Chai. I don't have a problem, you have the problem. Stay away from my Chai! Oh, Chai, my precious, my sweet, sweet Precious. Back off, all of you, stay away!< Huddles in corner, holding onto little battered, chipped cup for dear life>
