Whirlygig rewinder   (+3)  [vote for, against]
Don't get too close.

I know I'm a little late with this one, and I may have missed the big bucks, but I love the image.

You have just finished watching the latest video rental and press Stop and Rewind on the remote-control.
Instead of the usual clunk, clunk and beerrrrrrrr of the tape rewinding in the machine. The top of the video player slides open and the tape is raised from within, looking vaguely like a football rattle. Now the tape starts to rotate, slowly at first but building up to a respectable speed. The tape is attached to a static cog on an arm. This arm moves in a fashion, giving momentum to the tape, thus spinning it about the cog and rewinding the tape.
When finished, the tape is carefully guided back into the video player and ejected out the front.

A similar version could be applied to cassette players.

I imagine it would teach your cat to stay the hell away from the stereo rack, too.

wow!
I wouldn't trust it with a valued tape though.. +1

The entire machine starts spinning around the floor as in Robot wars, rewinding the tape as it goes.No cats here.

It would perhaps help to remind people to rewind the tape before returning to the rental store.

It would make an interesting Walkman without batteries, playing the cassette by bouncing the hips as one jogged.

Yeah [Qnow], I hoped nobody would spot that. I think it would be possible to insert a pin or rod that is extracted when the tape is taken back into the machine.

I used to do something similar with cassette tapes on biros when I was younger. +
