Your Face on Mars   (+5, -6)  [vote for, against]
Your face built on Mars

Controversy continues over the Cydonia site on Mars. Is there a face there or not? The "Your Face on Mars" project would ensure that there really was an earthly presence left for ever on the red planet by actually constructing a human face there, which would of course be clearly visible from the Earth using a telescope.

A competition would naturally have to be run to determine who’s face was going to be constructed.

Your Face on Mars!

Enter competition today!

The image at the bottom is probably the most telling. [Adze, Oct 20 2005]

To be visible from earth - even with a powerful telescope - it'd probably have to be the size of Iceland.

Last-time I paid a fortune for my image on the Moon, I was told a number of years later that I'd been suckered, and that that image had been there for ages! As you can imagine, I'm not playing that game again!

[Vernon] ended the controversy, no? <link>
-- Shz, Oct 20 2005

oh yea UnaBubba? - so you're compelled to see faces in every landscape and natural feature you look at, every day, and you think everyone is doing this? Are they all winking at you in unison?
-- xenzag, Oct 20 2005

Does it have to be my face?
-- bungston, Oct 20 2005

No, it should be [my face your]'s face on mars, instead.
-- calum, Oct 20 2005

I would rather have my face on the moon; it's closer and will erode more slowly.
-- jellydoughnut, Oct 20 2005

only a few of us will get that, [calum]
-- po, Oct 20 2005

I'm still trying to determine how calum decided on the name for his alter-ego.
-- RayfordSteele, Oct 21 2005

A combination of
a) an attempt at self deprecation; and
b) listening to lambchop.
-- calum, Oct 21 2005

You should have listened to [po] and gone with [tinky-winky].
-- Cedar Park, Oct 21 2005

//You should have listened to [po]// is the story of my life.
-- calum, Oct 21 2005

I had no idea that [my face your] was secretly [calum] in disguise. I'm not sure but it sounds vaguely like a Duke Nukem reference to me.

My guess would be that this competition would cost several pounds/dollars each if every person on earth were to enter. How is it that the face is going to be created?

HD - good question, but thought you would have figured this one out. Some time in the future..... a careful bombardment of a planned area by 9.000 explosive filled Deloreans, in commemoration of their 1,000's winter solstice door flocking celebration. The result would have the effect of creating a series of holes of varying depth like a half-tone print. QED ! :-0

jellydougnut - I've reserved a second blotch for you on Jupiter. The moon is already taken.

HD? I was just assuming that any intention to make a big indentation on another planet would be preposterously expensive. Don't you think we've done enough damage to this planet without going after other ones as well?
-- hidden truths, Oct 21 2005

Nope. Blow 'em all up I say.
-- wagster, Oct 21 2005

sorry HT that was a typo error - but you're probably right - too expensive etc etc - how about " Your Face on a banana instead " ?
-- xenzag, Oct 21 2005

/" Your Face on a banana instead " ?/ Sounds like a job for the Laserfurterator!

//Controversy continues over the Cydonia site on Mars. Is there a face there or not?//
Actually, it's my face. It isn't a good likeness. But I didn't pay anything for it, so I can accept that.

I was about to post an idea titled "Your face on Mars" when I found this one. Worryingly it turns out that I read it and anno'd it before.

My plan was to sculpt new faces using decommissioned Trident missiles (my current hb weapon of choice) strapped together in clusters to give sufficient range.

I suppose I should bun this given that I seem to have neglected to do so last time.
