bag o' baking soda   (+6)  [vote for, against]
bad air works against itself

Everyone knows that sticking a box of baking soda in your freezer and/or fridge keeps the smelly things from being quite so horrid. but it seems to me that, left in a box, you only have one tiny section of surface area exposed to the tundra down unda.

Wouldn't individually packaged, hanging mesh/perforated plastic bags (a la "boil-in-a-bag" minute rice), containing baking soda, do a much better job at aerating the nasties?

It could probably be hung via a little suction cup, or gummy adhesive, or something.

(?) Zeocrystal http://www.zeocrystal.com/products.html
Mesh bag ("It's so safe, you can even lay a bag of Solar Crystals next to the cutting board when cutting onions to absorb fumes or next to the fruit basket to slow down ripening.") [pottedstu, Jun 25 2001]

I think Church and Dwight makes a box with slotted sides for just this type of application.

My inlaws have small plastic baskets everywhere with charcoal briquets inside. I never noticed that they smell old, so that might work.

The briquets? the inlaws? Never mind.

There are 'odor-absorbing rocks' sold in mesh bags for closets and basements; I don't know if they'd do in a fridge. Reusable, too, if you live somewhere with enough sunshine.

Zeocrystal do something similar (see left). It doesn't mention fridges, but you can keep it next to your onions, so it must be good. Also, the list of smells it banishes is so impressive: "urine, smoke, pet, skunk, mustiness". And what kind of skunk would that be?

When I was young, we used to have these things called (if i'm not amnesiac) "Fridge Fresh" that were blue eggs with holes in them that would sit in the egg compartment of your fridge (don't get me started on *that*) and freshen throughout. I remember thinking it was really cool that they had a space on them where you could write the expiry date based on when you opened them (well, I was only 9 year old).

(Please help me get a life. Even evening classes must be better than this.)

That is "pet, skunk" not "pet skunk", alas.

How's the evening classes going, 'stu?

Baked, Arm and Hammer makes a box of baking soda that, when opened, exposes one entire side of the box, with some fine mesh holding the baking soda back
