criminalise revenge/unauthorized euthanasia of pets   (+10, -1)  [vote for, against]

There are reported cases of healthy pets being euthanise by an ex spouse during or after a divorce.

If the pet was a human, then it would be considered murder.

The same standard should apply to pets, at the very least under animal cruetly laws.

If the pet was obtained after a divorce, the law should require that the owner provide a reasonable opportunity for the ex partner to obtain custody of the pet if they no longer want the pet.

Only once the ex partner declines, or does not respond within a reasonable allocated time, could the pet be put down.

one of the increasing number of lol yanks slanted articles on the bbc news website [calum, Mar 12 2014]

Takes his dog to the vet and has it put down... [mofosyne, Apr 27 2015]

What [21Q] said.

We will bun this, since it cannot be applied to cats, which are not in fact pets but a sort of unpleasant parasite.

... and adult cyclists that ride on sidewalks, at night, without lights.

A little research would have shown that euthanising a perfectly healthy pet for no other reason than an owner's wish to kill it is at least a misdemeanor crime in many locales, both for the owner and the vet. In all 50 states, if proven in a court of law or before an AVMA board of censure, unwarranted euthanasia will result in revocation of a veterinarian's license to practice.

But all that is beside the point, because you're going to have a hard time finding a vet willing to do it. I'm not saying this shit doesn't happen, but in general people don't become veterinarians because they have a great enthusiasm for the wanton slaying of healthy animals. Rather the opposite, in fact.

//decriminalization of vehicular homicide of jaywalkers//

Or, as we call them in the UK, "adults who, over the years, have learned to cross the road unaided".

Depends if the vehicle has to swerve to hit her.

What [21Q] said (Twice in one thread, DAMN that hurts ...).

// they're on the sidewalk because they don't have lights? //

Well, no lights lit on the top floor, certainly.

LED bicycle lamps, front and rear, with batteries, USD $5 delivered on eBay. There's no excuse.

If you want to cycle, do it on the road, not the sidewalk. If you have no lights and it's dark, then either walk, or risk being run down. Easy.

Why bother if taking the risk leads through darwinism to an eventually improved accident free species?
-- rcarty, Mar 11 2014

That's EXACTLY what we've been telling you for years. Finally, someone listened ...

//        What Alter said. Should've known he'd chime in here. It is his area of expertise, after all.   //

No it isn't, it's my Dad's area of expertise. My expertise lies in metalworking, riflery, and offending certain types of people.

//... and adult cyclists that ride on sidewalks, at night, without lights.// Lights don't always make a difference. Last summer a Reserves' platoon's night run on a footpath was very briefly interrupted by a cyclist coming 'round the bend the other way.
-- FlyingToaster, Mar 12 2014

We would pay a dollar to watch that.

If get interspecies marriage legalized first wouldnt this be automatic.

Or maybe you could legalize revenge euthanasia of humans
-- vfrackis, Mar 12 2014

That is legal in many parts of the world.
-- Alterother, Mar 12 2014

Including a number of US states.
-- calum, Mar 12 2014

//legalize revenge euthanasia of humans //

... and there was much rejoicing.
-- 8th of 7, Mar 12 2014

Amongst other useful compounds, we would like to draw the attention of the audience to the fact that nicotine is extremely toxic to cats.
-- 8th of 7, Mar 12 2014

So is cannabis, which is quite toxic to dogs as well.
-- Alterother, Mar 12 2014

/Do you suppose, perhaps, that they're on the sidewalk because they don't have lights?/

Indeed, well said. I applied exactly the same logic when my truck's headlamp fuse blew and I needed to get home. Took down three paperboys, the postman, and Mrs Featherstonehaugh's chihuahua. Got in terrible trouble.

Mind you, for the chihuahua alone it was worth it.

I thought bad euthanasia only consist of revenge minded euthanasia...

Not putting down your husband's pet just because you don't like animals, but your husband does... without his input

Argh... narcissistic personality disorder much? (Link added to annotation)

eh, this "issue" is just fighty people looking for more reasons to fight and besmirch one another. Some people fuss over and doctor ailing animals, some put them down.
-- bungston, Apr 28 2015

It seems to me that if someone has got together with a person whose character would allow them to consider this in the first place, the problems were there at the start of the relationship - either it was in haste or due to a victim mentality. Everyone makes mistakes of course, but this means the person doing it probably has sociopathic tendencies which were not noticed at first. Still, such people usually do very well provided they can control their impulsiveness, so maybe it's just a strategic failure on their ex's part that they split up.
-- nineteenthly, Apr 29 2015

//adult cyclists that ride on sidewalks

So, you'd get them to ride on the pavement instead?

PS The Pavement (London, SW4 0HY) might complicate the issue.

PPS The Pavement is strangely close to the Polygon. Very literally minded, our ancestors.
