volume controls that dont need software

I hate when i try to turn the volume down to avoid waking someone up and the software that control the value takes a minute to awaken since its been pushed into virtual memory from non-use.

audio cards should have a new connection to connect audio controls, initially just volume. later we can add equalizers and stuff too. one on the outside (for seperate units for controls) and one on the inside (for use with keyboards with volume control and MBs that can directly recognize those buttons and send them to the audio board).

Ah. Irony.

This might have been useful in 1985, but even the most cheap and rubbish computer speakers have volume controls. What next? Colour screens?
-- pottedstu, Mar 18 2003

My speakers have this. They're linked to software, but <plug>since I use Linux, it doesn't get shoved into swap. And I've only got a K6-2.</plug>

Is that good, [galukalock]?

i know that many speakers have volume controls. but thats not what im talking about. im talking about changing the volume (and even equalizer settings) on the sound board seperately from the speakers. so that the controls from the keyboard could directly change the volume with no software.

Not even keyboard-decoding software?

[potted] - they do screens in colour now?

[froggy] - you simply need to place a set of ear muffs over each person you don't want to disturb. Not only will they sleep through the full volume squeaks and squawks, but you get comedic value every time you look at them.

On a related note, does anybody know of any soundcards with balanced inputs/outputs (audio guys will know what that means)? Would probably reduce noise levels considerably.

[potted] - where would one find these so-called "Color Screens" ??
-- oldvan, May 28 2004

I seem to remember the old soundblaster cards came with their own volume knob...Baked!
