new skins for bananas   (+4, -11)  [vote for, against]
remove old mucky yellow skins and give them a nice cellophane easily zippable skin

I do like my daily banana and they are an excellent source of instant energy. however I cannot abide the yellow skins they come in or all those funny little stringy bits that end up draped all over your clothes and face. I propose we process bananas & possibly put them in their own little square boxes for delivery purposes.

right way to peel banana [senatorjam, Jun 29 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004]

I know you're joking but this is a really really bad idea. Banana skins account for a good 50% of the fun-to-be-had-with-bananas. As well as looking comical and being extremely slippery, you can make rash generalizations about someone's personality by seeing which end they peel from. They're also bio-degradable. Big fishbone.

This is unrelated but I remember that someone in Japan? started making cubed watermelons for stacking purposes a while ago... will try to find a link.

<g> there was an episode of Jonathan Creek (UK TV) when he experimented on the slippability of bananas and disproved this as a myth, has anyone here ever slipped on a banana?
-- po, Jun 27 2002

This reminded me of a cool trick:

Get a needle and thread it with a piece of cotton. Insert it into the "corner" of a banana. Push it through just under the peel and out of one of the other corners. Then loop back and enter this corner through the same hole and go under the next edge.

Need to draw a diagram really, but hopefully you get the idea. Once you have gone round all three sides you should have two ends coming out of the place you started. Pull both these ends, so that the cotton cuts through the flesh all the way back to this corner. Repeat the process at inch intervals down the banana. You may have to practice a bit, but you said you eat loads of them.

Anyway, the end result if you do it properly is that the banana is ready-sliced when you peel it. What's more, it's very difficult to see the holes if you use a nice thin needle. Watch the looks of vexation as your fellow banana eaters peel away, only to have perfectly sliced chunks of banana fall on the floor around them!

Oh how we laughed...

Maybe they could be shipped pre-cut inside the peels, thus preserving them from browning in the air?

[po]- No one I know has ever slipped on a banana peel- an old Charlie Chaplin myth, but loose grapes on the supermarket floor are another story...
-- polartomato, Jun 27 2002

I've slipped on a banana skin before, and I know someone else who fell off his bike when the tyre slipped on a banana skin (it was actually one he'd discarded himself half-an-hour earlier).
-- stupop, Jun 27 2002

I've slipped on a banana skin but only for the amusement of small children.

I'm totally against this idea. If anything, it should be the other way round. Get rid of all packaging and replace it with banana skins.
-- DrBob, Jun 27 2002

actually its really those sticky gungy little thread things that you get on a banana that I *really* detest. is there any way of getting rid of them and then replacing mother natures packaging then?
-- po, Jun 27 2002

link added.
-- DrBob, Jun 27 2002

Leave bananas alone, they're fine just as they are. The only two things you can do to improve them are turn them into Banana Splits, or Toffe Banana. Sorry, po, fishbone ... you're just too picky.

tucked my skirt in my knickers and tried that experiment, I was OK until I tried to dunk the banana in my coffee.
-- po, Jun 27 2002

Ahhh....Peel them, right, of course.
-- IvanIdea, Jun 27 2002

Topic on MSN June 27...coincidence? see link The Great Banana Revolution Should you peel bananas from the bottom up?
-- senatorjam, Jun 29 2002

I tried it the once and it didn't seem to make much diffrence to be honest.
-- po, Jun 29 2002

Thing is, keeping bannanas in great big bunches, skins intact, is by far the most efficient way to protect them during shipping. If you don't want that nasty stringy stuff, then go to a tropical country and get ripe bannanas fresh from the tree- a totally different experience! And bannana peels really are incredibly slippery- but of course they have to be placed correctly-inside smashed flat on the ground, outside ready to be stepped on and become one with the bottom of your shoe.

hey guys i just did a science experiment and i found that bananas actuly slippery buy pineapple skins are sliperyer
-- sockless, Jul 22 2006

In ten years there will be no bananas and you will yearn for those sticky gungy little thread things.
-- wagster, Jul 22 2006

Good for you, [sockless]. I hope you didn't hurt anything.

//In ten years there will be no bananas// They're virtually unobtanianas in these parts, after a cyclone flattened most of the plantations.

[po], would you care to explain your second to last annotation? I'm intrigued.

//biodegradable// Genuine cellophane is biodegradable. Is also breathes a bit, so the bananas wouldn't go too yucky. The plastic so-called cellophane isn't and doesn't.

looks like I've been swiss-cheesed sm. sorry, I cannot remember! possibly someone suggested eating them while doing a handstand.
-- po, Jul 22 2006

Or eating bananas upside down? I can see the problem, you could burn your foot on the coffee. Also remember to invert the [po] but not the banana, or you're back where you started.
