Though the filters are powerful, I suspect most of us do exactly what I do -- keep a browser window open and click recent or hit F5 every so often.

I propose an HB ticker, implementable via the RSS feed. Given the fact that new ideas don't always pour out like the Niagara Falls, the ticker would have Idea Titles and Annotation options, and of course category filters including "random", and interspersed, of course, with a healthy mix of halfbakery taglines.

Blogware Same problem, different websites (sometimes without RSS). [Worldgineer, Jan 28 2005]

I'd bake this today if I still had access to VB. You could create a simple little tray-based tool that checks for new ideas every 10 minutes or so, and pops up a message. The rest can be done with views.

Of course, much (all?) of this can be done with existing RSS tools. I'm sure someone will wander by and show you how.

Wow! It's like you're standing right behi- AH!

Beware ideas like this, for they do not scale. Most of the time your request for an update is going to return "nothing new". So you waste the site's finite bandwidth needlessly.

Many sites with RSS feeds are having huge problems with tools like this right now.

Beware the Ideas of March?

I would like to point out, though, that the idea does not force a polling implementation, merely suggests that one could be implemented via RSS. I'd take a publish/subscribe API on any weekend when Jutta has some extra time :)

Why the fascination with polling ?

If you're logged in and have the "stream" option on your account, everytime there's an add/anno/vote (user-definable as to what's what) the server spits out the info on the Halfbakery Port to the User's IP's.
