RAM marking colors   (+5, -3)  [vote for, against]
Markings for RAMs to tell what type and side it is placed into the motherboard

I broke accidentally my RAM slot because I forced it wrong side. If there would be color markings in RAM and RAM slots, there would be no such misunderstanding. There are normal DDR1-3, EEC, and what else special RAM formats. If every Producer would make a mutual decision to use protocol color markings in the motherboards and RAMs, it would reduce broken components.

I accidentally broke my EWE in a similar situation.

Look at the little notch.

What [snictown] said, and don't force it. There's already an identifying standard for RAM; you just ignored it. [-]

Thanks [bigsleep]. "Dipswitch" is officially my new favourite insult.

Guess what? They sell more RAM if you break it, so they have no incentive to make anything easier for regular people. Why do you think that notch is so close to the middle...they want you to break it!

If you don't have the motherboard manual, it might not be easy to make difference between memory types also, e.g. EEC memory that is used for servers looks very similar to normal RAM.

There's a lot of standards in computer hardware that could do with being better labelled.

There's a lot of owners of computer hardware who could do with being more careful and better informed.
