Go directly to the gulag, do not pass go, do not collect bread.

The release of this new board game is to be cleverly timed to cash in on the second wave of red-retro that’s bound to hit some time soon.

I envisage a kind of Risk! -Monopoly hybrid game. I don’t mean to simply copy either of these classics, but it is easiest to explain if I use examples all will be familiar with.

Players would be split into revolutionaries and counter revolutionaries. The aim of the game for the revolutionaries would be to knock over a plastic model of a tractor and replace it with a stature of Lenin. The aim of the counter revolutionaries is to stop either of these events from taking place, or to topple the Lenin statue once it has been erected within a given timescale of turns.

The revolutionaries would build a power base on working collectives, numbers of loaves of bread produced and having an efficient five-year plan. Counters could be little hammers and sickles placed on a map of the USSR, which would form the centrepiece of the board. The tractor/Lenin statue would be situated on Moscow, but you could divide your resources to try and knock over more than one tractor/erect more than one statue at once. The others being placed at different cities. In order to complete one of these 'major game moves' you'd have to hold control over all the collectives surrounding the city for a given number of turns.

Counter-revolutionaries would try to infiltrate as many soviets as possible, they would do this by trying to generate as much underground literature as possible in each turn. Counters could be little books, and printing presses. Addition wild cards for this side could be western agents who provide news of the outside world.

To spice things up a little, players from either group could get parts of their work force ‘sent to the gulag’ this would work a little like prison in monopoly, but for each term inside, the people have a chance of coming out converted to the other cause. Special edition packs could be sold with a bottle of Smirnoff and some shot glasses.

So, don’t hesitate, support the state!; get your friends round, don those big furry hats and play Revolution!
