Ok, really simple idea that is probably baked, why not attach some kind of rotary strain gauge to the front gear system on a bicycle (the ones which you pedal) in order to detect whether you are in the right gear or not. The small piece of electronic equipment connected to the strain gauge could automatically
select the correct gear that you should be in!

Bicycles are very efficient machines - what you're proposing is adding extra stuff (strain gauges, automatic gear shifters) which would absorb energy and reduce efficiency (and occasionally go wrong, need maintenance or break). Not worth it just for the tiny benefit of not having to think about gear changes in my opinion. |

Theres a whole range of ratios where the bicycle doesnt even work. This is a good step. |

A simple solution would be to harness what already happens when you're in the wrong gear. At these times one can stand on the pedals and they refuse to turn. Often this causes the derailleur to "jump" and the chain skips along until it recatches some teeth. When this happens the gear should change automatically. |
