I'd like to see a database for the Windows family of OS's, which lists as many of those cryptic filenames as possible, and for each, gives a summary of what they do.

For example what is ASFSIPC.DLL and what is its function, What types of function does it affect or play a part in ?

There must be many tens of thousands more!!!

I have two copies of ASFSIPC.DLL, one in WINNT\SYSTEM32, the other in WINNT\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE. Do I know what they do? No, not a clue. Do I care? Absolutely not.
There is such a thing as too much information. If you *really* want to know, ask Microsoft.

Microsoft doesn't want you to know. Windows does *everything* for you. They know best. Now just buy all of their software to solve all the problems in your life.

OK, so it's dull. OK, it's boring. But it is potentially useful. The DLL help system linked by thumb doesn't actually tell you anything about what the file does. Croissant for suggesting an IMDB for system geeks.

A nice idea but [Jinbish] is right, Microsoft doesn't want you to know. Its taken years and a court order to compel Microsoft to release information on the inner-workings of but a few APIs [see link].

Until then you'll just have to be happy with "it's fer yer Media Player."

I don't think Microsoft knows what half of that crap is for anymore.

ASFSIPC.DLL? My first guess would be Active streaming format -something- Inter Process communication .DLL Once youve been with windows long enough you can figure out these things. If youre desparate open the dll /exe in a text editor and look for plain text messages ; youll find some clue as to what the dll/exe does
