Funny Viruses

Viruses are almost always harmful. Why not make them funny?

I've always thought that virus writers were really boring individuals. They take a truly cool (and ancient!) concept and do the same thing...over, and over, and over...

How many times have you heard of the virus that deletes your files? Or erases your BIOS? Or SPAM's itself to all your friends with a stupid Email message "Hi! I will want to be my friend? Come here, now!" or something equally as asinine?

Why not just a virus that's a harmless practical joke that goes away after a day? Like causing your computer to beep randomly every so often. Or play random "Max Headroom" clips (since Max was a virus anyway!) Or turn your homepage to something silly like the Hamster Dance?

Granted, we don't need more viruses, but if we're going to have them, let's make them interesting...

Oh, a _computer virus._ Sorry, when I first pulled this up I was kinda hoping for a biological one...

bliss, you didn't know about hamsterdance? I 'spose that's why your name still has 'bliss' in it. I've seen it, and couldn't get the image out of my head for days, despite all efforts at self-inflicted amnesia...

I actually made what (*I* thought) was a really funny "virus" (actually, just a little BASIC .exe, called in the autoexec.bat; thems were the days) that almost got me kicked out of high school. (Bear in mind, however, that this was genuinely the FIRST time ever that I'd been in trouble in school!)

It just made random beeping noises rather rapidly and *laughed* at you when you tried to quit. rofl. Stupid CS teachers. How in the world are they supposed to teach when they can't even!... <rant digression>

Put your email address here and you might get what you wish for.

Why funny? I still say go for useful...or risk spreading false, damaging, and misleading claims.

what exactly is a hampster then? Mr Runfo.
po, Apr 27 2002

thought it might be what residents of Hampstead have started calling themselves. after all plums in the mouth tend to result in hamster cheeks eventually.

The really early viruses were jokes. Harmful viruses didn't show up until the novelty of the virus idea itself had worn off.

       There once was a hampster
who set sail to sea in a hamper
When his sister the coyote
tried to nail him to a boat, he
set to sail, to outer space,
and with a yawn told her to face
the disgrace of being brother to a gangster.

The moral of the story: Never hamper a a hamster with a hammer.

Noticed how the new bird flu looks like maki sushi. Not sure if that counts as hilarious.

H7N9...even sounds like a sushi order.

       Not funny-hilarious; funny-strange. Hmm.

I remember one going around purportedly from Coca-Cola (would work with your favourite beer brand too) which wanted to reward the recipient's customer loyalty with a 'free drink holder'. When the person clicked the link their disk tray opened.

Virus making. Yet another art vastly improved upon by way of the profit motive.
