insert an unusual word into new tv shows. Viewers can then be identified covertly using linguistic shibleths | |
In history, linguistics etc a shibboleth is a
word or way of saying things that identifies
one group from another. In pop culture now
it's becoming hard to define what genre
and demographic a person most identifies
with. I propose that the catchphrases of
new main characters on shows incorporate
an uncommon vocabulary word. If someone
watches the show regularly, that word and
its pronunciation and usage
subconciously become part of their
vocabulary and they can thus be identified
unknowingly to a statistically decent
accuracy in a short conversation.

I could swear I've watched shows whose plots were mostly based on SAT vocabulary flash cards. |

I suspect knowledge of the content would be more effective. Vocabulary is easily learned but references to idiomatic plot lines are impossible to keep track of without following the show. "Words spread like a cold but real understanding must be cultivated like a rare orchid." -(marketing wisdom) |
