Most browsers have the abilty to bookmark web pages as you are browsing. Once you have bookmarked a page you can find the page again by selecting it from the bookmarks menu.

A keyword bookmark would offer the same ability to save and find bookmarks but would work by linking the web page to a piece of text that you enter instead or a URL rather than a menu item.

As an example, to mark the halfbakery you would, while browsing http://www.halfbakery.com/ hit ctrl+D (add bookmark) and a window would pop up asking for your keyword bookmark text. You would enter 'halfbakery', 'half' or, for the sake of brevity and ease of access, just 'h'.

To get to the page in future, all you would need to do is enter the keyword back into you web browser in the url field and the browser would call up the web page.

Why?: If I've got my hand on the keyboard I generally prefer to use keyboard shortcuts and this would generally be quicker than going through the menus.
But I like using my mouse: there's no reason that the bookmarking process couldn't also create bookmarks in the normal way that you could browse via the menu.

Opera Browser http://www.halfbake.../idea/www.opera.com
Opera has this function [y4, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004]

There's a feature in NetCaptor that does just this. They're called "Aliases". You do need to ctrl-C the address and then hit a menu item, but you can then give this url a shortcut word that you type straight into the address bar in future. You can also set up search shortcuts ("QuickSearch"). Then you can, for example, just type "hb st3f" in the bar to get all your halfbakery entries.

       <mild grumble> This isn't actually a halfbaked idea, it's really very good ..... I would use this .... shame more browsres don't implement it </mild grumble>

I was kinda hoping that this would be original and new. Ho hum.

8th: Why the grumble? Because its baked?

Great idea. I don't know how much I'd use it, in light of my current browsing preferences, but I don't seem to be able to set such a thing up quickly in i.e.6 because the favorites folder creation system doesn't allow characters such as "C:/MyShare/Favorites/Index/H".

Thanks, though, for setting the wheels in motion.

The part where you enter the keyword in the URL field and it navigates already exists in Internet Exploder (since about version 4). All you would have to do is add a UI for defining new ones. The keywords are stored in the registry with the rest of IE's settings under the key "SearchURL". Only problem is if you enter a keyword without a space, it tries it as a system name instead of a SearchURL, I suppose there might be a way to convince it not to do that.

Mozilla offers keyword specification -- not from the file bookmark or add bookmark dialog, but in properties. Type the keyword in the url bar and off you go.

This is very, very baked. Though I think IE might require PowerToys or something.

I appear to have gone blind. Would some kind soul take the time to point out where this feature is to be found in, say, Mozilla 1.1. All I can find is 'SmartBrowse' which allows me to point my browser to a search engine or 'Internet Keywords' which takes me to Netscape's choiciest sites.

Powermarks a software provides this ability very well.,

I've been using "Networked Bookmarks" on my network for years. It's handy but most users don't use it.

Sorry to sound like broken record, but Opera once again.
