I frequently see cars leaving a large shopping center near me, from the well lit underground carpark, at night, and entering the brightly lit highway. Their lights are off. They don't know.
The tunnel from such an underground shopping center to the surface should be matte black painted with only
cats eyes for light. This would remind drivers to turn on their lights. Darkest. Material. Ever.

Maybe some slight ambient light so pedestrians can see? |
|
| |
Sp: Matte; "Matt Black" is apparently the name of both a British DJ and a California photographer. |
|
| |
Nowt wrong with 'Matt'. The double entendre it provides is a bonus. |
|

I guess you could make this tunnel from one giant carbon nanotube - see link. |
|
| |
If it were giant, would it still be nano? |
|
| |
Er, maybe. I think it could still be a nanotube providing it was just one atom thick. Dunno. |
|
| |
I still want to see some of that linked material - given that it would provide (effectively) no feedback of it's distance away from the eye, would it be like looking at a rip in space? |
|
| |
And if a true zero-reflection material does get created then what are the consequences with respect to the energy build up from the light energy it would collect but not release? |
|
| |
Having seen the frankly intimidating, strobe-like visuals at a Coldcut gig, I can safely say that a Matt Black Tunnel would not be conducive to safe driving. |
|
| |
// would it be like looking at a rip in space? // |
|
| |
No, rips in space look quite different. |

Durrrr ..... it gets hot ........ duuurrrrr ...... photons are comverted into thermal energy ....... it's a perfect black-body absorber, that's all. |
|
| |
I figured the conversion of energy part; I was more thinking along the lines that at some point the body will become so hot that it radiates energy into its environment; i.e. stops working. When would that point be reached, and would there be a slow leak or a bang? |
|
| |
I note that the link states it is theoretically possible to make something that 'approaches' the perfect absorber rather than actually being able to reach that point, so perhaps it's all a moot point. |
|
| |
Conduction, Convection and Radiation. If an object is a perfect black body absorber then it doesn't re-emit radiation. All photons which strike it are converted into thermal energy. |
|
| |
However, if it is in an atmosphere, it can lose energy again by Conduction and Convection. When it's suspended in a vacuum, that's when things become more interesting....... |
|
| |
Ah, I see thanks. I was wrongly thinking of the "perfect absorber" as a complete energy trap, letting nothing out in any way whatsoever. |

That's known as an "ex-wife". |

or "ex-husband" - dead, thank god! |

I'd quite like to graffiti his stone (if he had one) any suggestions? the nastier the better. |

//love the category!// oops, thanks |

If there were a black felt drape hung across the exit, cars would turn on their lights in hopes of seeing into what was apparently an impenetrable darkness. |
|
| |
Could work [bungston]... but the felt might catch on cars etc. as they drive through it. Main idea is to make them feel it's dark and they need to turn on their lights. Otherwise, they end up on a fully lit highway where they don't notice, and end up being a real hazard. |
|
| |
I like it! Use it for gangland executions. Big Tony and Da Boyz throw Louie da Lip into the tunnel, dressed in black... 230 cars run over him before he is discovered. |

<Wump, wump. "That was weird. Was that one of those new custard-filled speed bumps?" "I dunno, I didn't have the lights on."> |
