I was struck by this sentence on the mensa.org site:

"There are Mensans on welfare and Mensans who are millionaires."

Mensans on welfare? While I would not advocate a Soviet style human resource allocation system where one might be tested for abilities and pushed into fields regardless of want or desire, it seems that this is a bit much, at a time that there are plenty of gainfully employeed idiots.

Sponsored by contributions from the the millionaire Mensans and from those who can't pass the tests but secretely yearn for Mensa's stamp of approval (perhaps we can get those cool mailing labels that come with other charitable contributions), the Mensaid Society will seek to leave no genius behind.

Mensa honorary president Victor Serebriakoff's support for eugenics and involvement with far-right organisations (also try googling for "mensa" and "anti-semitism" for lots more entertaining brainy hate). [kropotkin, Oct 06 2004, last modified Oct 17 2004]

       Absolutely.

I also want to work on an Honorary Mensa exchange program that's similar to the minor league system in sports. They sends us their dumbest genius, we send them our smartest idiot.

their a high IQ doesn't mean that you necessarily can function in normal society, it just means you are inteligent

I'm conducting this poll on IBD: It's resulsts (as of now, the sample is still small) did not quite prepare me for the reaction here, but are nevertheless interesting in combination:

What do you think of Mensa?

       1) Card carrying member

       2) Bunch of dumbest geniuses around

       3) I'd join if they would only relax their standards

       4) I try to stay away when she's having them

       5) Which of these is not like the other?

       Responses

       1) Card carrying member 0 0.00%

       2) Bunch of dumbest geniuses around 30.77%

       3) I'd join if they would only relax their standards 15.38%

       4) I try to stay away when she's having them 30.77%

       5) Which of these is not like the other? 23.08%

Maybe they are on welfare because they are smart.

If you want to test yourselves against Americans than there is a program on the FOX network tonight, May 5th, that will allow you to do that. Tonight at 8pm Eastern, 7pm Central Time (American), the Fox network will run a two-hour program called 'Test The Nation 2'. This is based on a popular program by the same name that has aired in Britian over the past few years.

For warm-ups you might try the linked National 2003 IQ test on the BBC site. BBC apparently sponsors the British version of the show. I’ll wager we will not see any 140 scores on this test! Each of the questions are timed and must be answered in about 10 - 15 seconds. There are 70 total questions. This is not your typical on-line IQ test – and with some questions, it helps to be British.

Here’s the link to that BBC IQ test – for those who care and dare-

And here’s a link for the FOX site for those who want to take the US Test tonight –(The American test will not be up until tonight)

Just as the ability to score well on an IQ test has no direct correlation to real intelligence, neither does membership in Mensa correlate to the desire, ability, or worthiness to attain or maintain wealth.

Instead, how about merit-based grants for members' noncommercial, pure science research projects (ref. the Daughters of the Daily Special in Tom Robbins' book "Jitterbug Perfume").
