It would be cool to have a linux distro designed for specific computer models, such as "Dell 2400" or "Gateway Such'n'such".
The distro can include drivers for all the standard hardware that might be on the system. Home users don't change their hardware that often, anyway.
A lot of hardware,
such as video, ethernet, sound, is built-in to the motherboard nowadays. Gentoo

Hopefully soon all hardware vendors will be shipping Linux drivers with their products. Maybe Dell is doing this ... ?? ... I don't know. Lindows probably is or should via their PC at Wal-Mart. |

Gentoo Linux does this for chips. Not fish 'n chips. Rods Tiger can tell you allllll about Gentoo. |
|

What'd I tell ya? I typed anno, found link... |

[Rods] I think a model-specific distrobution might help those who are not technically inclined, but still want to try linux. |

"Will linux work with my machine?" |
|
| |
"What video card do you have?" |
|
| |
"I don't know, it's a Gateway 4650". |
|
| |
That guy has probably never taken the case off of the system. |
|
| |
This way, Joe Nongeek just gets the distro designed specifically for his model. |
|
| |
I've actually had bad luck with knoppix. The only places I've gotten it to run is on very recent, high-end laptops. |
|
| |
It seems to freeze on the hardware detection phase. |
|
| |
So, I figure, assume that Joe Nongeek has a standard, brand-name model computer, you can remove most of the hardware detection from the get go. |
|
| |
But Knoppix is a good idea. |
|
| |
stupid idea. it is better to have one distro that runs on all hardware free drivers are available for. |
