Earn Your Commuter Science Degree
  [vote for,

So much time spent on that commute, daily, rain or shine, especially for suburban train riders. That's 2 classes a day you can be taking to improve your knowledge and skills, perhaps earn a degree.

Done in cooperation with your neighborhood transit authority and community college, with classes designed specifically to be ingested on your portable device.

The trouble is, changing trains so often on a journey makes it hardly worth getting the iPad out, I find. When I had a job a while back, I can’t remember any particular section of my 1hr journey being longer than 12 minutes on the actual train (mostly less). The journey consisting of a sequence of many such sections and changes, with waiting for trains that had enough room to get onto taking as much time as the actual journey it would then provide. Then there’s the problem that all the seats are taken and you’re crushed up against the crowd of other people, so it’s not possible to reach round and get the iPad out of the bag, and hold it at a comfortable reading distance. It all sounds good in theory but in practice the journey is hostile to consumption of information.

I download "in our time" and listen on headphones while riding the bus. There are also some good lectures at Oxford Podcasts you can get a mp3s. I tried Ronsheim's lectures on music but they were less suitable for bus listening.

Well, last april I went alone and tried starting up by myself with an idea I had, which I gave the working name of “Nured” to (which is the name of one of my youtube channels — “Nured Hybrid broadcast/broadband”) and the first thing I was to work on was developments of spatial audio involving binaural positioning of different types of information. There’s a theory known as “Right Ear Advantage” in dichotic listening, which essentially states that auditory verbal information arriving dominantly at the right ear will have an advantage in analytic processing, whereas the left ear has an advantage in emotional payload processing. Nured was to be “education, in stereo”. (the name was supposed to conjure up notions of neuroscience and education, but just between you and I, it came from the idea of extreme binaural abuse of mis-positioning of sound in stereo, so that it appears ‘in your head’).

The whole of last summer was more or less wasted in creating a test set of informational/educational recordings (which is why I recited almost all of the W3C EmotionML recommendation — it was new at the time, it was something almost nobody was familiar with — and also it was something I personally wanted to be more familiar with as a side-effect of doing all of this). I binaually panned the audio information under different modes in Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X to create either binaural stereo or surround sound audio files, to see if it made any preferential difference in practice to the attention given to the information. In the end, I ran out of money and had wasted about four months of the summer doing this to no particular valuable outcome. It didn’t work.

Have you considered a career in biotech?

I was mentioning to someone else recently — if I hadn’t been seduced by technology and design, I would probably have become a paleoentomologist.

You had a lucky escape. Most people agree that the Ents were made up by Tolkien.
MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 25 2015

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice.

[+] but unless you're planning on having everybody be on the transit at the same time some people are going to miss bits.
FlyingToaster, Jul 26 2015

When I lived in San Francisco this would have been incredibly lovely for riding on BART. But now that I am stuck here in the cornfields of hell, and there is no mass transit, except for a couple scary buses. it wouldn't do me much good. A 2 second class would be about the size of it. From one side of town to the next.

So a sentimental bun for you, for bringing back memories of riding the rails.
