 Alerts the troops without blowing off an appendage.

Scatter these around the perimeter of your camp. If anything (man or animal) steps on one of these, a sharp loud "pop" is heard...loud enough to scare the begeezus out of the intruder and loud enough to alert security that someone unauthorized is close by without severing a limb or causing any major flesh damage.

       Sadly, the intent of land mines is to inflict harm when your soldiers are not around, not to merely alert them that someone approaches.   

       Land mines need to be included in the international war crimes treaties, as they are just as indiscriminate and harmful to civilian populations as nerve gas.
