       I'm sure it's been done, many times.   

       The main problem is most casual gamers like their eye-candy - perhaps to the extent of equating graphics with quality - so minimallist games generally don't get popular.

       The most minimal would be a tower defense game completely in the mind. And the benefit: you could always win, or always lose, or both.
