A step closer to making eBook readers just like real books! | |
As eBook readers continue to make inroads into the world of reading books of all types, the true bibliophile may begrudgingly accept the convenience of the electronic newcomer, but there's one thing missing: they just aren't *real* books. The feel of paper against skin can't be mimicked electronically
of course, and neither, until now, could the distinct smell of your favourite volume.
The BookNose (version 1) is the answer to that, and Real Soon Now will be available for most of the popular brands of eBook reader. Easily and unobtrusively connected via the device's USB port, BookNose emits a variety of aromas to intrigue and delight the reader, ranging from "Brandy and Cigars", "Chesterfield Leather Sofa", "Real Coal Fire" to "Wet Labrador" so even on the train you can imagine your faithful rain-soaked hound sitting loyally by your feet. Renewable cartridges last up to 30 days of continuous use.
Version 2 is currently being developed in conjunction with eBook reader manufactures and book publishers and will incorporate a multi-aroma cartridge which can emit the appropriate smell depending on the book text. Imagine a character wandering into a rose garden as BookNose V2 emits the gorgeous scent of tea roses...

Top tip: if you go around the East side of Radcliffe Square in Oxford you pass by the ventilation outlet of the Bodleian Library. It is the most concentrated aroma of old books I have ever inhaled. You could probably do a deal with them to install a scrubber in the outlet and distil the fragrance down to use in your premium capsules. |

How about a real piece of paper which comes out of the sides to fiddle with while you read the screen? Or a scroll/printer which prints onto real paper as you read? |

Ah, but it's not just the smell is it? It's the tactile sensation of the turning of a page which wafts the smell.
We might need some sort of roladex type mechanism to reload a continuous second page to flip. |
