Capitol Rotation

Washington comes to Mrs. Smith
  (+3, -2)
(+3, -2)

Some fascinating statistics this morning:

We have 9M more government jobs than manufacturing jobs.

Richest counties in the US overwhelmingly hug Washington DC (surprise!)

In the same manner as sports leagues maintain a level of parity and competitiveness by assigning draft picks to the weakest teams each year, take on both the divisiveness of the country and the persistent poverty in regions between the coasts by rotating the source of government largess to the weakest area -- perhaps West Virginia followed by Detroit -- as measured on a 6 year cycle.

Interesting: here (Canada) the capital area's a nice place, but it's not outstandingly wealthy.

Shame about the mfg jobs ratio, though. I doubt ours is any better.

In unrelated news, Windows 10 reminded me to vote today : odd since I have reminders turned off and, being Canadian, don't normally vote in US elections.

You should put the White House on wheels; trundle it around.
FlyingToaster, Nov 08 2016

I would suggest putting it in lockstep with the voting cycle but only perhaps every 4 terms as it would be severely disruptive to both government and the 'winner' city.

And how would the result after the government operation leaves look? I suspect something like Olympic graveyards featuring conference rooms and unoccupied office buildings.

Perhaps the state capitols could rotate it every so often. I'll take the Hawaii term...

       Road Trip anyone? I'm driving.

I feel bad for the career folks having to move and move and move.

I have in my mind the terms "summer capital" and "winter capital". Maybe some people used to do this? Czars?

For some reason (maybe the coffee) I have in my mind a sci fi novel with an oceangoing society where the floating capital is sited according to prevailing winds, auspicious planets, monster migrations etc.

"I feel bad for the career folks having to move and move and move."

Perhaps a taste of military mobility would give them a better feel for what the armed forces folks have to deal with.

Probably more than one group moved their seat of power according to weather, back when things were localized enough to make that appropriate.

       You're missing out, there.

That way, maybe it could run for cover when the Canucks show up and try to set fire to it again.

If the US would rotate the capitol through Westminster, y'all might have avoided the disaster that's unravelling tonight.

I think rotating Washington is an excellent plan. It's been right-way-up for a long time; inverting it for the next 4 years would seem like a timely idea.

I guess I should have specified the axis of rotation

Is that anything like the Axis of Evil ?

In the sense that I'd love to rotate some folks in our government to Venezuela and North Korea, sure.

Good luck convincing them to move.

Good idea, when the Manchurian Candidate turns up January 20th, tell him the seat of government has been moved to somewhere in the Aleutians...
not_morrison_rm, Jan 14 2017

// convincing them to move //

Bayonets have traditionally been very effective as an inducement to relocate without further discussion.

I have a lot of issues with Voldemar, but I'm still quite skeptical of the Manchurian notion. I think more likely he decided to go that way after the "he's a bright guy" comment, and build the whole house of cards on top of that by refusing to back down in any way.

Then again, some people still refuse to believe Lenin was a German agent.
