Visual effect is an endless stream of colorful grains converging on and disappearing into the center.
Construction: A two part chamber filled with multicolored sand (or other granular material, metallized glass fluorescent plastic beads, etc), with a funnel between upper and lower parts - a bit like
an hourglass. In the base there is a screw drive to continuously return material to the upper portion at a constant rate, matching what flows through the neck. The top surface is flat and transparent, and fitted with a mirror at a 45° angle so you can look straight at it rather than down.
Sketch to follow if I have time later today.

If you could mount this on a wall. And if it were flat like a picture. People would buy it. But a screw drive might not work. A vortex maybe. Make it vacuum forced? |

Than you [mylodon]. Thank you [mylodon]. |

I did envision it more as a desk or tabletop diversion, kinda bulky, dont think I could flatten it for a wall mount. Havent decided if a screw drive or other approach would be best to return the grains to the upper chamber, but it needs to be a slow an steady return, likely at several points around the perimeter. |

OK so you need to have two different types of grain, of two different colours. They need to be able to be separated somehow in the base of the machine, not sure how to do this, perhaps make them slightly different size or something to allow mechanical sorting. Then they are put into two hoppers, with two feed mechanisms up to the top. The top dispenser is arranged as a ring around the upper edge of the device with a load of equally spaced noxxles which each dispense a different colour from the next one. The ring gradually rotates so that a spiral pattern is formed in the sand as it moves towards the centre. Perhaps the entire device should also rotate. |

I hadnt thought of separating them by colour. Was hoping the letting them all run together would let the eye see random variations. |
Even monochrome would be interesting to look at just from variations in shading. I got this idea while pouring some cleaning powder through a funnel, all white stuff but It was interesting to watch. |

I tried to look but all I saw was ad after ad. I stopped at the point I would have had to load Google's adware on top of all that |
Where? On instagram or iganony? I use Safari with 1Blocker so I dont notice them. But if its burdensome I could try to find another host. |
On iganony. I use a script blocker and an ad blocker, and after allowing all ads and all scripts except Google's it still wouldn't show any images except ads |
Hmmm
your script blocker must not be up to snuff there. When I switch 1Blocker off I see what you mean though. |

Tonnes of animated banners adds. Even finding the link that takes you to Posts - where youd be able to see my items - is hard because its sandwiched in the middle of the page. |
Open to suggestions for an image hosting site that you like better. |
Sorry, I don't know any. I would be happy to perform some searches, but you can do that as well as I and you're more familiar with what you're looking for in an image host than I am. In defense of my blockers I got nothing at all until I deliberately permitted everything except Google's stuff. Then I got the banner ads I can see and can click "post", which shows your descriptions but not the pictures they link to, even if the descriptions are clicked. |
Heh... on my own machine it still take a long time to load the pictures on the Post section but they do eventually come through. I'll look for another way to host them but it might be hard to find something secure, free, and without ads. |
Certainly. But does it create a physical thing of lovely carved wood, blown glass, and cleverly designed fittings to sit impressively on your desk or bookshelf? |
I like your sketch. How'd you make it? |
// sketch ... how did you make it // |

I swiped a line drawing of an hourglass from somewhere online and made some edits. Used Microsoft Paint. |
