Get suicidal people to die in movies

it'll look a lot better than CG stuff...

I was watching the "making of Ghost Ship" featurette on the Ghost Ship DVD yesterday and they were talking about how the liked using real props and prosthetics because it looked better than computer generated graphics. This brought a new thought to mind: instead of prosthetics OR CG people, why not just get REAL suicidal people to be killed in the movie. For instance in one scene in the movie a metal hook swung down and hooked a lady from her neck to her cheek. Although it looked real, it would have looked much more real if someone had ACTUALLY been hooked. And as for the idea of killing a person, these people they would use would be suicidal, so they would die anyway, just this way they'll die famous.

Oh dear. I sense your idea will soon be decorated appropriately for "Ghost Ship."
krelnik, Apr 20 2003

Is it necessary to explain what a bad idea this is?
angel, Apr 20 2003

If this person were *so* optimistic that they would bet their life on getting it right in one take, they probably wouldn't be suicidal.

From the director's standpoint, "take two" is a real pain.
lurch, Apr 20 2003

This was suggested years ago by the comedian Bill Hicks, but with the terminally ill and convicted criminals instead of the suicidal. When I get home, I'll find the excerpt and post it.

[virus] I sense you could use a few pointers on what works and what doesn't work here at the bakery. If you are interested, see link. I think you'll find all of your ideas so far have run afoul of one or the other of the items on my list there. This one ran smack into Rule 11.

I wouldn't see a movie that used peoples' deaths for entertainment.

Even if this was a serious suggestion, it wouldn't be worth the effort. All real footage I've seen of people dying doesn't look particularly "realistic", and certainly isn't cinematic. (So the guy gets shot; a short thin stream of blood spurts out; he falls over. Not what I would pay money to see.)

I think we judge realism by the special effects we've seen.

A fishbone given from all mothers of suicidal people everywhere would still not surpass the stench which rises from this idea.
RayfordSteele, Apr 20 2003

actualy most movies try to make the gore somewhat fake looking, a chinease film (i think) called "suicide club" made vary real looking gore. I myself have not seen the movie but my freinds say it was quiet tramatizing and people walked out on film becuase it was so disturbing. they also say it REsensatized them to violance. so movie can be vary gory but they don't want to be becuase people will walk out of thearter and movie won't make any money, and if u haven't noticed that what most movies are after...

... Which, in this case, is only to the extent that murder itself is un-pc. In any event, it's not nearly as pissed off as we get at misplaced apostrophes.

Bill Hicks, "A Killer Idea" from "Relentless" (1997):

Now I'm watching Terminator 2... and thinking to myself, "You know what? There's now way they're ever gonna be able to top these stunts in a movie again - you cannot top this shit." Unless they start using terminally ill people as stuntmen in pictures...

What? Do you want your grandmother dying like a little bird in some hospital room, her translucent skin so thin you can see her last heartbeat work its way down her blue veins? Or do you want her to meet Chuck Norris?... She's out of her misery, you've seen the greatest film of all time!...

Okay, how about these guys being exe cuted? Don't do that, poison, electrocute - how cruel! And unimaginative! Put 'em in the movies!... Just don't ever say you love film as much as I do.
friendlyfire, Apr 21 2003

This is one of those times when you wish you had more than one fishbone. I hope you never have to find out how it feels to hear a friend has killed himself. There isn't much worse than a senseless death. Except maybe one for the purpose of 'entertainment'. Boooooo.

When I was about 4 years old, I thought that this was actually how movies worked. I grew up.
kevindimie, Apr 22 2003

I remember a film (watched late at night - perhaps on Channel 4, for all you British 1/2Bs) where a western was filmed in a Peruvian village. In the movie, the cast went back to the village a year later, only to find that the villagers had made "cameras" out of wickerwork, and were shooting each other with real bullets in order to recreate the drama they'd had when the film crew had been there...
lostdog, Apr 22 2003

Nobody wants to see real snuff films. (Correction) Ok, so a small minority want to see snuff films. In my opinion, these people are borderline, if not full on, sociopaths and should be denied seeing such films on principle alone, but that's just my opinion.
I have to admit though that the first time I saw The Terminator, and saw Arnold, (he let's me call him Arnold), cut the eye out of, what was so obviously a mask, I couldn't help but think how much more real that scene could have been if the part had really been cast by a man with one fake eye.
Or if Mark Hammel playing Luke skywalker had been an actual amputee; all of the segments preceding his hand being chopped off could have been filmed using mirror angles to make it appear as though he had use of both hands, then the scenes following would have looked allot more realistic, than the hand pulled inside his jacket actually appeared.

       (-) regardless.

There is a one armed stunt man that specializes in scenes wherein his hand is blown/ripped/bitten/chopped/hacked off. Now that makes for some pretty realistic special effects . By logical ([half]-logic anyway) extension, in order to be equally effective this idea would require dead people to die in movies. Nope. That doesn't work any better than the original idea. (-)

maybe they just read the title. and read 'get Suicidal Peope to *Star* in Movies;. Hey, Sally, don't be so down. Here, star in a summer blockbuster to cheer yourself up.

On a darker note, can someone please delete this bollocks?
sambwiches, Apr 23 2003

[half] Most, if not all, of the limb-free soldiers in "Saving Private Ryan" were actually amputees.
friendlyfire, Apr 23 2003

[sambwiches] Nobody tagged it m-f-d, so it's probably not going away. I don't think it violates any of the rules of the 'bakery, anyway. It's just really loathed.

Could be this season's "Vagina Jam."
snarfyguy, Apr 23 2003

Well, the best grounds for marking it for deletion would be that snuff films are not an original concept. However, snuff films allegedly involve unwilling participants, while this idea one calls for volunteers. Just an all-round bad idea that is well sunk by all those fishbones. Filter on fishbones, and you'll never see it again.
DrCurry, Apr 23 2003

You could modify this slightly so that the suicidal people don't actually die but just think they will. This would allow them to reflect more deeply on the idea of death, and to some extent to experience their own demise. (That said, there's plenty of serious philosophical argumentation why there's nothing wrong with letting people rationally decide to kill themselves.)

You could also apply the same principle to halfbakers who get too sanctimonious about the subject of death, to show them that impending doom can be fun and entertaining. And then kill them.

I already went off that cliff once.
