This started out as an annotation to another idea on the HalfBakery, but I think it deserves to be developed independently. It would have an unpleasant blackish-green skin, velcroed hands for choking and throttling, and my favorite: Translucent, bulging eyes backlit by white and green LEDs, lit alternately by a toggle switch. This would allow it to switch between its alternate personalities of Gollum and Smeagol (thanks for sp, Rachel!). One more important feature: a pull cord which causes him to utter one of several phrases, recorded by Robert Inglis (narrator for one set of LOTR books on tape. He did a particularly humorous and disturbing take on Gollum's voice.)

With the first LOTR movie coming out (Dec. 2001) I suspect that this is already in the works.

Peter: well, plush dolls are already spongy and absorbant by nature. a brief soak in water (or the colloid of your choice) will probably get the desired effect.

Also, I've alway figured Gollum would smell like stinky fish.

       Forget Gollum/Smeagol; I want a Fizzgig doll.

they'll come out with gollum action figures, but that's not the same at all. I prefer a "squeeze the half-eaten fish to hear gollum talk" approach to the pull-cord, but talking would be a must.

Is a Cuddly Chthulhu close enough? Elaine Moertl designed them for Choasium Inc.

with the LotR movie coming up, i'm sure there will be a line of poseable action figures, as well as a bunch of other crap. just like star wars, insane clown posse, and spawn figures. LotR has many more characters than star wars even, and just as huge a following, making this potentially a huge product line. just think, there's all the hobbits, the dwarves, elves, the 2 Beorn figures (bear and man), gollum, and the whole darn goblin army. you just buy as many of them as you want, and see who can have the largest army. there's a fortune to be made.....

       I'll wait for Galadriel, thanks.

Oh yes! This one got a croissant based on the title before I even read the idea. He's always been my favourite Tolkien character.

As for cuddly chthulhu, I'm supposed to be getting one of those for my birthday. Always wanted to take an elder god to bed...

I think they should really make the Gollum doll. It would be a perfect gift for a family member or sibling/child.

[waugs] yes, Gollum in The two towers is excellent. I almost didn't see the film because I thought the first one was pretty bad. Gollum really made the second one - his voice was done perfectly. The animation was pretty incredible also, he was wonderfully expressive.
