NFC logo on tap-to-pay credit/debit cards

Because why ON EARTH is there a WiFi symbol on them?

And, of course, the terminals that accept them.

The contactless payment logo is NOT the same as the WiFi logo. It's turned onto its side. And it (usually) doesn't have the dot at the narrow end.

It looks far more similar to the WIFI icon on Android smartphones than the NFC icon. I looked it up, out of curiosity, and on iPhones it does just look like they turned the WiFi icon on its side. But why would THAT icon be used to represent a contact payment? It's... kinda the opposite of WiFi really.

Yeah, that Android one looks weird to me, But it sounds like your gripe is more about that than anything else. The icons on my credit cards and payment terminals have never been a source of confusion or angst for me. I don't recall ever looking for them on my phone or watch.

I use the tap to pay feature on my phone quite a bit too, so I'm well acquainted with the icon. It just seems odd to me to have what is very clearly a broadcasting symbol for a contact payment system.

What if I told you radios are used? Would that blow your mind?

Right, I get that. That's why it works through a case and the phone's backing when using Apple Pay or Google Wallet. NFC means "Near Field Communiication", which contrasts sharply with WiFi's much longer range. They should at least make it with FEWER arcs than the WiFi symbol to indicate the significantly reduced range. Turning the WiFi symbol sideways indicates neither reduced range nor physical contact. It's a stupid symbol for what it is.
