I like picnics but hate ants. I suggest a replaceable sticky strip to form an ant-barrier and keep kids bite free. Sticky stuff would also contain wasp repellent.

       Nice idea - Do ants bite where you live?

       Maybe some kind of flammable substance could be used. Keep those formic pests at bay with a ring of fire.

       They're nasty little b*gg*rs. It's almost impossible to stand still on any given patch of grass for 5 mins or more.

       //ring of fire//

       Using curry maybe? ;-)

       How about a galvanic strip around the edge of the blanket? Won't hurt you and the kids, but it should give the ants a boot. You could run it off a 9V battery.

       I wonder if ants would cross a picnic blanket edge woven from spider's silk?

       Obligatory medium-sized, semi-classy anthill with one, two-level stage, pole and mirrors Post

       We have an outbreak of fire ants here, unfortunately. I'm not sure whether the forces of Good, or the forces of Evil, are winning.

       There's a lot of nasty ants about, apart from fire ants. We have some critters called Jumper Ants... YeeeooWWTCHH! [link], on Myrmecia species. There's about 90 species, all of which possess a sting, like a wasp.
