Porn Replacing Browser
Helping you hide your pr0n habit.

Here's the idea. Whenever you load an image from a webpage, it's stored in your temporary internet files, and is thus viewable. When your temp files are all missing, it's apparent that you've been up to something...

So why not have a modified browser that takes a set of stock images (say pictures of flowers and puppies and the like, or maybe cars or even flowcharts) and holds them in the temporary internet files while storing the real offending images to some encrypted file, which when opened as a normal .jpg looks like random garbage?

Also, one could just use some keyboard shortcut to replace all the images displayed on the page with the stock set...

Maybe it's too late and I've had too much coffee.

A browser that replaces every image on a web page with porn? Excellent idea.

Ian Tindale, Feb 22 2006

Well... the idea is quite the opposite but I suppose one could replace the stock set of image files with anything, really. It sure would make slashdot more interesting.

"I am fairly sure that if they took porn off the internet, there would only be one website left, and it would be called 'bring back the porn'" - Scrubs. No real relevence but I thought I'd post it anyway.

I'm wondering how people coped with this when there were only porno mags?....quick, hide them in the bible or children's books.

[xandram] You got it in one.

I once proposed a service that would translate commonly censored sites (porn, anything about China, etc.) with simple and still readable substitutions. Can't remember what I called it, though - it may even still be out there somwhere.

Anyway, of course, that technique is now used by all the spam engines, so perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned it.

Oh, yeah, getting back to your images: you can work some funny tricks with jpg encoding - you can take the mechanism that draws progressively sharper images, and use it instead to draw entirely different pictures. (Not sure how to make it work, but I've seen some clever examples.) Maybe you could use that in some way to obfuscate your precious porn.

Yes, it's an interesting problem to turn your hand to.

Ian Tindale, Feb 22 2006

A hard problem, you might say.

Is this something that might run in Palm OS?

zen_tom, Feb 22 2006

The cookie deleting browser kind of set this off, as it... didn't do enough to cover your tracks. Like I said, if your Temporary Internet Files are missing it's obvious you've been up to no good.

The JPEG sharpening thing is kind of what I had in mind with the encryption, not really encryption but something to make it impossible to tell what the pictures are really showing.

kevinlipe, Feb 22 2006

//(say pictures of flowers and puppies and the like)// It was looking at pictures of puppies that got you into this mess to begin with.

Well you can always just keep a "Backup" of your temp.. or rename the real one while you are up to no good then delete the new one and name the old one back.

Cerium, Jul 09 2006

If you got enough innocuous images into your temp folder, no one would have the patience to check through all of them. But bun anyway.

what's a //pr0n habit// ? is that where you are compelled to sexually interfere with prawns?.... I wouldn't be interested in that sort of thing - but each to their own.

xenzag, Jul 09 2006

       //sexually interfere with prawns//

There's a joke about an undertaker's apprentice with a punchline that runs remarkably close to the above. Too gross for here though.

On topic, just who is it that would be poking around in your temp files on your personal computer? Or is this a posting about work based machines, audit trails, and so on?

boysparks, Jul 10 2006

I actually know that joke.... yummy.
