Sole-Swapping Shoes

Extra traction in tricky conditions

I usually wear sneakers in the winter, even when there's tons of snow outside, because I spend most of my time indoors anyway. If it snows a lot and there's ice, I go to school in boots and carry along a pair of sneakers.

Combination indoor-outdoor sneakers could have soles that swap out for boot-like soles for better traction. The soles could be attached with velcro.

This isn't a year-round shoe. I'd wear it if there was snow and ice outside and I had to get to school, because I don't like lugging boots around indoors. I would still wear regular sneakers during the summer.

Whatever your traction needs, this site has it! http://www.shoechain.com/

Swappable open-source replacement soles - not proprietarily linked to one particular shoe...."The term may trace back to the Middle Ages, from the Gaulish shoe or gallicae." [zen_tom, Mar 09 2009]

I'm not sure velcro would be the best means of attaching the sole, but I like the concept. I wonder, though... have you not seen traction chains for shoes? They're almost exactly like traction chains/cables for car tires, but they go on shoes. I'll look for a link.

Sorry, but this is completely baked. See the link. I Googled "Traction Chains for Shoes". Sorry mate!

Note: The site in the link shows these being used on boots, but I've seen 'em used many times on sneakers here in wintry Spokane.

       Traction chains? TRACTION CHAINS!?! That's so...that's so...SIMPLE!

Wait, I don't get it. Do the shoes in the link have soles that come off?
plasticspoon, Mar 08 2009

Not exactly. They're basically really grippy soles that go OVER the existing soles on your shoes. Look at the one in the middle, the Ice Trekkers. That one has spikes.

I think our ideas are sufficiently different. However, I do admit that their idea is better.

Well yes, they *are* different, and you idea *is* unique, to my knowledge, which is why I didn't MFD it. I admit, I do like the silliness of your idea, very appropriate to the Halfbakery. If it weren't so very close to an already-existing invention, I'd bun the hell out of it! Tell ya what, I'll remove my fishbone and remain neutral for your effort.

Combine this with a shoe that doesn't look like crap after 6 months of use and you've got something. (I know it's possible damn it! People just like to buy crap that's cheap and doesn't last, so that's all they make)

       What you need is crampons...
