but then the joke's on him.

This movie is about the life of a guy who finds corny jokes, and jokes told all wrong, and tells them right, the way they were supposed to be told.

He starts off with a simple text website, then makes memes, and finally viral videos which turn out to be pretty successful. Meanwhile, his personal life falls apart around him, and there's nothing funny about it.

Finally, he decides that he has to reframe his own life so that it will be funny. On the way, he discovers that life is no joke.

True, but that's why we need humour. Dark humour is better than just dark.

[+] because on second read this could be a retelling of many comedians' lives. A lot of them are very depressed, troubled people. The list of suicides in that field is long.

I used to do stand-up myself. But I'm feeling much better now.

Presumably you just do sitting down now?

I always wanted to try stand up comedy, but I can't get over my stage fright.
That whole prepubescent until 20 thing made me focus on humour at a very young age because it was both a good defence and an ice breaker but I could barely force myself to take the mic and say a few words at my sons wedding. (should have worn armpit pads that day)

I recently discovered a kindred spirit though in a 21 year old prepubescent stand up comic called Heath Cordez.
The kid totally slays.
You guys should check him out.

No, most of those guys (link) are a lot funnier than I ever was. But overall I think rates of depression and suicide are probably comparable regardless of standing or sitting.
