We have long had microwave ovens to heat food up rapidly. How about a microfridge that can do just the opposite. Maybe new microwaves could have a heat/cool setting, combining both devices into one.

Fast. Also, unlike "reverse microwaves," physically possible. (Although physics geeks should check out "optical molasses" below.) [rmutt, Jun 20 2000]

Cooling atoms with light. (Hint: won't work like a microwave in reverse.) [rmutt, Jun 20 2000]

"Ok, just nitrofrigerate it for 3 seconds."

This is called flash freezing, and there are machines that can do it.

You could do this with something very porous, say bread or sponge toffee, simply by pouring liquid N2 over/through it. As for microcooling a Christmas turkey with stuffing, I dunno.

Ony it should be called a "macrowave"
