Aeolian Storm Pipes

They let you know how bad this hurricane really is.

Available in two styles, Faux Bamboo or Notre Dame Classic, these tuned Aeolian pipes sound at certain wind speeds, which match the Saffir-Simpson scale, starting with Tropical Storm >39 gives a mournful tone that fades in and out. Cat 1 >74 adds a disquieting overtone. Cat 2 >95 adds a bass element. Cat 3 >110 introduces a discordant note that works well with the dogs and cats wailing. Cat 4 >130 starts a treble warble. Cat 5 >156 sounds a persistent scream that matches what the humans are producing, but louder. You really can't hear anything if the wind speed is over 165 or so, so there's no pipe for that. Custom tunings available. I've been trying to come up with something for the driven rain, so suggestions are welcome. Cymbals? Bells?

Got something like that going here at the Golden Gate Bridge. (link)

How about just a siren that's powered by a windmill? Faster it turns, higher the pitch and the louder the siren is?

Back to the bridge, my uncle was the lead engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge back in the day. (Gave everybody the family old bolts, I still have mine) I'm pretty sure he'd be disgusted by them not being able to figure out a little fluidics issue like this. I've got the solution, maybe I'll send them a letter.

On a scarier note, both him and my hero Bill Wattenburg, the smartest man in the world at the time, said the new Bay Bridge retrofit wasn't going to hold up in an earthquake. The bolts didn't pass the tests for survival beyond a certain richter scale earthquake, one that absolutely could happen.

The Golden Gate sound effect reminds me of the tripods in War of the Worlds.

Yea, very disturbing. To me anyway.

I really do think we may be de-evolving a little bit as far as engineering skill goes. They built this thing 100 years ago, we can't even do a little retrofit that doesn't scream in the wind and keep multiple major metropolitan areas up at night.

I read a conspiracy theory saying we didn't land on the Moon (we did) citing the fact that 50 years ago we did it multiple times with comparatively old technology, so why haven't be been able to do it since? Well, start with the fact that we crashed a billion dollar probe into Mars because we got metric and imperial numbers mixed up, there's that.

In WW2, we went from having crap fighter planes to the best fighter planes the world had ever seen in a couple of years. (Not counting the ME-262) Can you imagine us trying to build a world class fighter plane in a handful of months now?

In California they're still working on a high speed train to nowhere. Indonesia just finished theirs. The USA is undergoing our cultural revolution and suffering from the same downsides that Russia and China did. It's not a meritocracy anymore, it's about being woke, connected and being aligned with the political parties in power, in California's case the Democrat party that goes unchallenged no matter what they do. When cultures do that, smart people who can get things done are swept aside for the chosen members of the party, no matter how incompetent they are.

The USA put a man on the Moon, NASA can't even put a satellite in orbit, we have to hire SpaceX for all that stuff. Luckily we still have some private industry that's capable, but plenty are going the woke / broke path. I hope we recover, we did invent pretty much every tech that makes modern civilization modern back in the day, but we can't even add rails to a bridge successfully now. Hopefully the pendulum will swing back to competency after our cultural revolution pisses enough people off.

Bun for the idea by the way. [+]

       Totally off topic but, I saw on a "mechanical failure" site today;

Buddy can't figure out the weird sound his truck is making...
...it could be because one of his asshole friends has duct taped an harmonica to his undercarriage. Not sure what to charge.

Made me laugh. Thought I'd share.

       Saw that, good stuff.

And pretty sure you don't have to apologize for being off topic after my completely unrelated rant.
