Gear ratio can openers

Some hand can openers require notable effort to operate; thinking seniors a near effortless version could simply have an extra gear and a gear ratio 2:1 so that half the effort was needed to open a can.

It is possible that people in the developing world do not have electric can openers. Putting an extra gear on a hand can opener with a gear ratio of 2:1 would make opening cans almost effortless which could also be good for seniors.

I kid you not. [Wrongfellow, Aug 29 2017]

This is simple, practical and useful.

Notably, it does not require gene xenotransplantation, exotic matter, FTL communication or quantum entanglement.

The next logical step is to have multiple gear ratios for different types of can, and some kind of automatic transmission to switch between them. [+]

Really? - I would have thought some sort of CVT mechanism would be preferred

Sounds good but might have to do some focus groups to see if people like the round twice can opener.

If it incorporated a tiny arc-welder it could be a can-closer as well as a can-opener

Good idea. And with less force involved, you don't need that robust handle. A speedier design, like those old hand drills, would probably work.

Clearly another application for the most wonderful Sturmey Archer 3 speed.

The extrapolation of this means even less effort to get needed calories. An intravenous drip from the farm to your arm.

We also considered that this would be a perfect application for a minature epicyclic gearbox.
