Professional appraisal network

Imagine a community of professionals where each professional evaluates other professionals that they know what they talk about.

As a software engineer to get a job I need to interview and be appraised by software engineers that work at that company.

Sometimes I need to do a take home test. Sometimes I need to whiteboard a solution to an algorithmic problem.

The problem is that skill levels at companies and between individuals are very different.

What if I could evaluate the skills of people based on their achievements and descriptions of their achievements?

We can learn who knows what they're talking about.

       Now you're talking about code reviews(?) rather than professionals evaluating others in their field - which is what I thought your original suggestion was.   

       I frequently poll my LinkedIn connections about other potential contacts to find out who knows their stuff. And LinkedIn is just one example, there are other professional networks that offer those kinds of insights.

       I think this is a great idea. There are skilled professionals who learned their craft on the job, not at college and therefore have no degree. I know many.   

       Mostly I know people who have a degree in one thing that went on to do something else, the unrelated degree is just proof that they can get things done. My buddy for instance who got a BS in physics from Stanford (on a full scholarship by the way) and went on to be an incredibly successful video game designer managing at EA and other big players. This would be perfect for that situation.   

       "This guy doesn't have a degree, but he's got the top score in the test we gave." The smart company's gonna hire the guy with the top score. [+]
