Waterbasin to the rescue
Am not sure how this plagiarism will be received by you, but I post it anyway because I like it so much and want to share it. | |
The bulk of this idea is not mine. It is by Peter Geerdink, a reader of KIJK popular science magazine.
This world contains 344 million cubic meters of water. 2% of this is frozen. What with the problems with the ozone layer and everything, if this 2% would melt, we the Netherlands and many other countries
with a sea side would have a big problem.
Now a water basin 100 km in diameter and 22 meters deep would hold this 2% (6.8 million cubic meters), thus keeping us all safe from floods. It is suggested to put it in a geologically and politically stable area. (any suggestions?) All countries that have a seaside and would stand to benefit would contribute to the enormous cost of this project.
My addition to this:
Around this basin we build our homes and live the good life. Boating, fishing, swimming, you name it we've got it! Tourism would be a good source of income. In the middle there might be an island.
Could be called: Keepsafe Lake. Or, Sea of Freedom. Another method of forestalling global warming

Isn't this already in place? It seems to me that every artificial lake and reservoir is keeping water out of the ocean. |
|
| |
Or were you planning to pump water up out of the ocean to this lake? It would be a lot cheaper to build conduits to some of the places below sea level and flood them. |

\\Or were you planning to pump water up out of the ocean to this lake? // Yes! |

An enthusiastic yes for doing a very big job the expensive way. |

Eyes shut. Think boating. |

Harness the southern current and wind to mine ice from the Antarctic shelves and pile it in the interior. In a few years, fill the 22 metre deep ring with seawater; freeze and repeat. Someday we could build diving boards over the great subsea trenches. |

Wasn't that cool, that thing I saw in a popular science magazine? Wouldn't it be neat if we all built houses round it? |

I think that the problems this would cause economically and ecologically far outweigh its benefits. |
