Blue flashing lights for vets

Emergency medics are permitted to display flashing blue lights on their vehicles when on an urgent call.

The same facility should be permitted to veterinary surgeons attending an emergency.

After all, there are many animals which are of equal or greater economic and social value to some humans.

All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others.

Behold, an idea beneficial to animals, humans and the furtherment of human culture. This has to be your, what, 5th beneficial idea since assimilation? What's gotten into you, [8th]?

I think it's just about the aged Labradors who fetch his slippers for him each evening.

I too am puzzled by this. I understand that [8th]'s cube has a ShitZu infestation, so it's possible that he's confusing "vet" and "pest control".

Typical biochemist, can't tell one species from another without a DNA test ...

File under 'if you build it, they will come', or similar. All veterinarians can just go ahead and start using [8th]'s blue lights, and if stopped by Office Friendly, simply act as if this has been normal since forever.

Ach, now I've shared one of my Northern Ninja TaoAlchemical Secrets...I'll have to kill you all.

Actually, if a car with prominent signage reading VETERINARY SURGEON (and driven by same) was driven at speed with blue lights and siren, it's more likely that the cops would (a) ignore it for reasons as above, or (b) provide an escort.

After all, stopping a vet on the way to treat a critically sick animal is going to do wonders for the police's public image (if any).

[+], but isn't it actually a green light, not a blue light, that indicates a non-ambulance vehicle on emergency medical business?

I was just thinking about this yesterday, because I want to put a green "[pass-on-left arrow] PASS ME" light-up sign on the back of my bike, activated by a button on the handlebar.

       *looks it up*

Turns out it varies a lot by country. Apart from the usage that this idea is related to: In Canada, where I live, green apparently indicates volunteer firefighters, emergency command post vehicles, security agencies (?), etc. In the UK, green is used for anti-lock brake warning (?), doctors, and ambulance control vehicles. In Japan, green is used for oversize vehicles and their pilot vehicles. In Canada, blue is used on snow removal vehicles. In Colombia, flashing blue lights are used for taxi decoration. In Hungary and Sweden, blue is used for emergency blood and organ transport, among other emergency vehicles. In Japan, blue denotes a "voluntary anti-crime patrol vehicle" (vigilantes?). For more, see [link].

I really love this one, but I must insist, in honor of the poster, that the lights be mounted in brass and mahogany housings.

       //Blue flashing lights for vets//

Came expecting some sort of strobe light interrogation / torture technique applied either by or to veterans.

       Left disappointed.

[notices author.. experience surprise at the apparent lack of general violence or explosions of some sort in the idea]

//In the UK, green is used for anti-lock brake warning (?), doctors, and ambulance control vehicles.// Not that I've seen. I don't think I've ever seen any kind of green light on a vehicle in the UK.

OK, a quick Wikipediaing says that they can be used by doctors and rarely by ambulance control vehicles. I stand corrected. Still never seen them, though.

Ask your chauffeur to point one out to you.

//Ask your chauffeur to point one out to you// - surely you mean "Ask your chauffeur to point one out to your valet"?

Knowing [8/7] and how fusty he is, I suspect these things would end up being carbide lamps, inside blue glass lampshades.
UnaBubba, Apr 05 2019

Living as you do in a place where the pinnacle of sophistication in lighting technology is a burning eucalyptus twig dipped in kangaroo fat, we can well understand how you would think that an acetylene lamp was exotic.

Best thing is for you to sit tight and hope that continental drift eventually moves you into the 19th century.
8th of 7, Apr 05 2019

Seriously? You live in England and you're blathering about sophistication?

The apogee of plumbing technology in Britain was *before* the Romans pulled out in 410 AD and left their Saxon allies to run the place so the natives didn't fuck it up too badly.

Incidentally, it looks likely your drift away from the continent is going to deliver you back to the dark ages.

So, not blue flashing lights for (string) vests?
xenzag, Apr 05 2019

I've heard that drunk drivers are actually attracted by flashing lights. Maybe if pubs and motels use more flickering lights we won't see so many drunks looking for a place in public to have their accidents.

Oh, and the UK vs. Aus argument is just potato, potato again, or as it's known in more advanced circles, 1 potato, 2 potato, 3 potato, 4.

Also because they spend all their time upside down, gravity has reversed the direction of their alimentary canal.

Love the idea and the wonderful bantering between Una and 8th. Ahhhh just like the old days.

Yeah, save the animals first. They have it harder and are somewhat dumber. sometimes.

Don't fucking start, [MB]... Jimmy Saville, Boris Johnson, warm beer.

PS We sent you lot Fosters because it was disgusting, so we figured you would lap it up. Lo & behold, it took off.

Well, Boris Johnson and warm beer get my vote. Both better than chilled piss. I'm sure there was something else.

//Don't fucking start// Oh yes, that was it. Gratuitously venomous creatures.
