Looking behind you in arcade horror shooters

Horror games is all about not knowing when a monster is going to appear.

Well most horror arcade games function by making monsters jump out in front of you. Well what if you had an arcade game that, in addition to shooting in front of you, you also have to watch your back as well.

This can be done in various ways that still preserves immersion. You can either do it the cheap way and add a pedal to switch where you are facing. Or you can detect if the gun is facing far left or right (or maybe even up or down). Or if you have enough resources, add a face tracking camera and check if the body is moving the right way. (and with even enough resources, move the screen around, or simply provide a 360 screen).

Just make sure you also provide 360 sound too, to let the shooter hear the monster creeping from behind.

Or pull another machine up so it is in back of the player. You would want a machine somewhat related to the first or it might be too jarring to switch back and forth. Or you could have a kid with a stick back there and whack the player from time to time. In fact the kid with the stick could be added to a lot of different games. You could put some padding on the stick if people complained.

Then again, there's likely to be a subset of individuals that enjoy the being-hit-with-a-stick thing, so for them you could charge extra.

However, as to the idea, is this not just a version of the 360 degree immersive game, which is Baked?

// you can detect if the gun is facing far left or right //

Umm... Lots of light-gun games do that. Track off-screen- left, view turns left. Track off-screen-right, view turns right.

// or if you have enough resources, add a face tracking camera and check if the body is moving the right way. //

Does an Xbox 360 Kinect qualify as "enough resources?" 'Cause I got one o' dem.
