Poetry meets jazz

Imagine poetry that implies words, fragments, concepts...perhaps to the point where the listener supplies their own synonyms for the implied meanings, and where one combination of those synonyms might produce a rhyming scheme. The problem with this is that one has to use common sayings, so there is a limited amount of material to work with, in even smaller combinations. Also, there is the idea of making the poetry make sense without the listener supplying the implied meaning, opening up the idea that the poem would have two meanings. Obvious and hidden. Uh, obviously.

Let's see if I can cobble something up here, no rhyme...

Every Man shall not live by bread, but that's the way the cookie/ Frailty thy name is Hell, hath no fury like a woman.

There. Very basic, and very incoherent on the face of it. But containing a simple message for those that parse. "Alone crumbles woman scorned."

Or

Over spilt milk, cite scripture for his purpose/ A book by it's cover, the best things in life.

This gets us...ummm: "Cry the devil can, don't judge, free." That is, that's what you get if you're feeling nice about it. :-)

This would take quite a bit of time to get used to, me thinks. With a promise of limited returns. Ah, well.

       Where's the "jazz" part?
egnor, Sep 03 2000

Somebody jazz said something famous about playing the silence between the notes.

I think this is closer to acrostic poetry, myself, and therefore more likely to be a parlor game or Valentine's Day flourish than anything else; not that I hold any of those things in anything but affectionate regard.

Jazz and poetry have always had a dialog going (for example, Jon Hendricks' lyrics to Count Basie tunes, "Beat" poetry readings with jazz combos, early rappers The Last Poets doing "jazzoetry" in 1972, and modern poetry slams). Whether the experience of jazz-and/or-poetry is about ephemeral sound pulses, a semantic reflex-response to some of the sounds, or the silences between the sounds is mostly a matter of what you're paying the most attention to, whether that's as a creator or a beholder...

jazz + poetry = hip hop, in some cases. Check out the Roots, though I think you may be talking about completely spoken word poetry, which I believe DOES exist with jazzy background music.

Pho, is the jazz part like improvising on a standard? Then it would make sense to start with other people's poetry, and go from there, maybe like
