Vinegar recycling scheme

Waste not ...

When all the pickles in a jar have been used, up to 30% of the container is still full of vinegar.

It may be coloured, of flavoured, or have herbs or spices in it - but, as a preservative, it's still fully functional.

The idea is to introduce a wide-scale vinegar recycling scheme. Consumers would be encouraged to take their used vinegar to recycling centres, where there would be containers for "light", "dark", and "other"

The vinegar would be filtered and if neccessary a bit more acetic acid is added, then sold for re-use - it would probably be fine on fish and chips, for example.

You think anyone wants that nasty old vinegar? I can imagine how you fish about for those last 2 pickles with your grubby pickle-grabbers, particules floating off into the sauce from the accumulated hoard under your fingernails. Not that there is anything wrong with any of that.

Here in Philadelphia there is such a thing as a "pickleback" The pickle juice is drunk just after a shot of bad whiskey to mask the flavor. I'm not sure if that shows dedication or weakness.

They do sell distilled vinegar. It ought to be cheaper to make distilled vinegar from contaminated vinegar than having to do all that fermentation.

And pragmatism. There is a strain of American drinking designed to quickly and cheaply solve the problem of sobriety.

One might pour the residual brine into a largish saucer and park it on a shelf. As one breezes through the room in search of a cold one or more ammunition the spicy scent of pickles will greet and delight the olfactory senses, reminding oneself that more pickles should be purchased, preferably the spicy garlic dills.

I ingest a swig full of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar every morning. It's murky and has stuff in it. I do it for my health. I love vinegar. So I love this idea. +

According to wikipedia, about a quarter of the world's acetic acid is reused:

::The global demand for acetic acid is about 6.5 million metric tons per year (Mt/a), of which approximately 1.5 Mt/a is met by recycling; the remainder is manufactured from petrochemical feedstock.
