ice-proof walkways

Flexible walkway material causes ice to break up when walked on

It should be possible to pave or cover walkways with a slightly springy or spongy material (maybe similar to high-tech running track material) that flexes just enough when walked on so that ice cracks and can be easily shoveled away.

       Living in Minnesota, I can see the beauty of this idea! ...Now if you can just find an inexpensive, long lasting, spongy material with a tough surface that doesn't lose any of those properties when exposed to trampling, sunlight, rain, and freezing... and runners would love it too!
