Using a database of known asteroid positions plus velocities from the asteroid belt the competing groups are given 5000 ion engines then told to calculate the orbital mechanics to agglomerate the asteroids to destroy earth
just like the Viking Mission zipped around numerous planets to create both
purposed direction plus velocity (link) the students or supercomputer users figure out how to nudge just 5000 pieces of dead planet to create an asteroid attack that kills all life on earth
Now the thing is that asteroids are fractally sized thus one years winner could be bested with another group using different sizings or timing of asteroids
The computing could be distributed voluntarily across numerous personal computers just like various molecular computation calculations That way everytime a person started up a game called Global Destruction II they could happily note they were contributing to the cause
now the coolest thing is if an idiot savant could just gaze weirdly at the camera and then recite the 5000 vector coordinates to win the Asteroid math olympics
