Why even attach a compass?

A "simple" map on a digital tablet (or liquid cristal paper, or whatever) that knows where is the north, thus orienting itself correctly as long as it's horizontal. Oh and by the way, it could also make some positionning etc; but that's, of course, as expensive as having a GPS embedded in the map, isn't it?

As for the subtitle. [sidi, Oct 04 2004]

Will automatically orient the map to true north or can be set to have the map oriented to direction of travel. Also works with PDA's. [Klaatu, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

I don't understand. Maybe it's the subtitle that's throwing me off. Surely there must be a compass device involved somehow.

I wonder if anyone makes a digital compass add-on for a PDA?

Come to think of it; has single application liquid crystal (tx) paper been done yet?
