In the U.S., vehicles on an undivided highway are supposed to stop 50' from where children are being let on or off a school bus.
While I can't say this rule is often broken, I do see it often bent - so that cars pull up immediately behind or along side a bus. This makes it difficult for other drivers
to see children who may be crossing the street, which is the point of the law to begin with.
The idea is for a beam or beams of light, minimally crossing the street at the front and the rear of the bus but optimally creating a large circle around the bus. The beam(s) would indicate the area where cars are prohibited while the bus is loading or unloading. If desired, cameras could be used to photograph the license plates of interlopers.

The rules are slightly different in NYC, for practical reasons. But it still sounds like a good idea. |

Have smoke machines mounted under the
bus. When the bus stops, start the smoke
machines up and make it illegal for cars to
drive through the thick cloud of
smoke surrounding the bus. |

//To prevent the little buggers being run over, I would hazard// But the bus doors are on the pavement (sidewalk?) side, shirley? |

[AbsintheWithoutLeave] Yes, but bus stops are haphazardly placed and sometimes children need to cross the street without a crosswalk or crossing guard. |
|
|
There are even gates on the front of school buses to force children crossing in front to move far enough away so the driver can see them. |

It's like pheasants, and deer, and salmon and stuff ... you ain't alowed to hunt 'em until they be growed. |

Bus-a-Pult... instead of exit doors, just launch (former) passengers clear of the street. Mounted on a swivel so you can launch them to the *other* side of the street, too. |

good idea, though, and sounds useful. |

// bus stops are haphazardly placed and sometimes children need to cross the street// And? There's something wrong with their eyesight? They need artificial means to allow them to cross the road? |
