It's for those times when you want to be able to understand what the characters are saying, but you're too lazy to read.
What are Closed Captions?
http://www.robson.o...apfaq/overview.html "Closed captions are captions that are hidden in the video signal, invisible without a special decoder." [calum, Oct 12 2002]

why not just listen to your tv with the volume on? |

[goostas] What if the movie is in Danish with English subtitles? I think this may have been the core of the idea. But, with DVD's, I can listen in English and have German subtitles if it tickles my fancy. Baked. |

Closed captioning != subtitles. |
American televisions contain a circuit for close captioning for the hearing impaired. If you need close captioning, why would you need to hear the television? Am I missing something here? |

But now you can have the sultry dame in the love scene with a completely out-of-sync Igor voice... |
the igor voice can be very off-setting for the sultry dame in the danish film, but there is already the voice-over industry. though homer simpson isn't quite the same in german... |

"The Osbournes" is the perfect show for this. Strange as it may seem to those from his homeland, some of us over here across the pond find him a mite hard to understand. I find I have to turn the captioning on to understand what Ozzy is saying, and to pick up on the UK slang that he uses. This invention could help mitigate that without me having to read the whole show, lazy bum that I am. |
You could also use this invention to automatically create spoofy dubs of bad foreign films, by setting the parameters of the voice to some highly inappropriate for the subject matter. Like you're watching some very serious Russian flick and all the voices sound like various Monty Python characters. |
...or you are watching Lord of the (onion) rings, and you want to hear Saruman with the accent of a Tsar! |

I'dl would love this idea if I could have the audio track from Bambi playing over The Terminator. Or, for more fun, have the audio track from The Terminator playing over Bambi. |
