Replace videotape machines for both playback/recording needs. Why hasn't this duo shown up yet?

TiVo + DVD would have an unneccessary MPEG->NTSC->MPEG decode/encode in terms of recording from the DVD to harddisk no? In addition to replacing a VCR with a single unit I want minimum audio/video degradation.

What's wrong with TiVo + DVD player?
jutta, Jan 07 2002

Philips is selling the DVDR1000, a DVD Video Recorder that can record on DVD player compatible media (provided you record more than 5 minutes or so). It can playback the usual set formats: DVD, VCD, SVCD, CDDA.

This is not exactly what you are describing, but close.

BTW, I was on the DVDR development team. We were also wondering why there is no harddisk integrated. Maybe an idea for a future product?

Offhand, I'd say to keep people from recording DVD quality stuff and making a million copies.

Pretty much. The movie industry tried to make VCR's illegal. They're having some success at making digital VCRs for digital cable illegal, or at least ridiculously limited.

Personally, I wouldn't mind being able to tie in standalone AV peripherals over Firewire. A bit better if you don't have a lot of cash right away, more flexible, and hopefully with some excellent UI development to avoid making it into the sort of hell seen in computing these days. But honest to God Firewire TV will never, ever, happen.

I read an article about this year's (2003) CES that suggested someone (I thought it was Hitachi) had released a DVD player with TiVo included (the actual branded service, TiVo). I can't find it online, however.
